Hi Everyone, I've just bought 'Mitcham Settlement Examinations 1784-1814',it's an amazing book packed with full info on families and individuals who were pleaing to stay in the area.It gives full info on their family history ie .where they and their parents (sometimes grandparents too) were from, properties they rented ,how much rent they paid ,family baptism and death dates. If they were not successful in their plea where they were sent to.It really is amazing gives a full background to that area(even lists for some people burial costs etc.).There are way too many names for me to list.......... So if you think you had any ancestors who lived in or may have lived in the Mitcham,Croydon or Surrey area in that time give me their names and I will gladly pass onto you any info I can find. I work full time so am only on the computer in the evening so please be patient for your reply........ I really am amazed I never thought that 1 book could be so informative it's just packed with families histories,(even my husband was interested)!. Elaine |

Hi Elaine Great offer! You may be able to help me as my ggg-grandfather was from the Carshalton area, and he married a widow from Mitcham: Charles Manning (1793-1857) married the widow Sarah Phipps in Carshalton, 21-Jul-1828. From what I can tell from the Carshalton register and the IGI, Sarah's first husband was John Phipps and I think that her maiden name was Ferridge. Both John Phipps and Sarah Ferridge were from Mitcham, and both born c1800. If you can find anything on the Manning, Phipps or Ferridge families, that would be great! Many thanks in advance, Richard. |

Richard, Sorry no Ferridges or Mannings, but I do have these Phipps, Ralph Phipps, born c1747 in Beddington, his father (not named) was a legal inhabitant of Mitcham by being a servant to Mr Myers.Hired himself to Rueport Davis of Crayford,Kent(calico printer)wage of 10s.a week but to board and lodge himself.Served 1 yr and 10yrs ago married Jane Allin at Beddington. John Phipps (father John Phipps) lived Carshalton served an apprenticeship to William Thoyts. Sarah Phipps (father Edward Phipps)(written 29/8/1807) Edward had hired himself 20 yrs ago to John Hatfield of Waltham Abbey ,Essex wage of 8 guineas a yr ,served 4 yrs.Sarah is at this time about 17 yrs ,was born in Merton, she is pregnant with an illigitimate child.(Edward signed,Sarah put her mark). Also there is an entry on 30/4/1808 for Edward Phipps again this time listing Elizabeth Phipps (no age or date of birth) stating that she too was pregnant with an illigitimate child..Although there was a great stigma at illigitamacy some people were prepared to fabricate a pregnancy(especially not naming the father) Just so that they could stay in the area and not be resettled. Hope I've been of some help Richard. Elaine |

Hi,the book is volume 27 and is from The Surrey Record Society it was published in 1973 and is printed by Unwin Brothers Ltd. It's edited by Blanche Berryman. It really is an amazing book and I'm just overwhelmed at how much information there is in it.The sad thing is that unless you know your ancestors lived or worked in the area of Mitcham then you'll miss out on so much information.Because there are people in here who hail from all over the country. So all I can say is give me your names and I'll look 'em up.
