1861 census i have Samuel Smelt born 1842 Beverley married to a Sarah born 1842 with a son Thomas William .Samuel was a cordwainer. 1871 census I have him in Beverley with a wife Elizabeth born 1847 but Samuel was a Drummer -Last York Militia with son Thomas William and another 2 Children 1881 he is still with a wife Elizabeth , loads of kids and a house painter Can't find him on 1891 . 1901 he is still with wife Elizabeth and a painter [unabe to work] Doyou think these Samuels are the same person ? There are no more Samuels about the same age on any of the census Cath

The first child was born 1860 so i can,t see that being his marraigebut stranger thing have happened . But where does Sarah from the 1861 fit in ?. any ideas welcome as its doing my head in.

Hi Cath, Sarah was probably his first wife, when she died in 1868 he remarried and had more children with Elizabeth. Will

in 1851 their address Dog and Duck lane great name Jeanette

That would be the second marriage to Elizabeth in 1869, first marriage to Sarah before the first child in 1860.
