So I managed to get a copy of my great grandmother's birth certificate. Her certificate states she was born in 1898 in 5 Grannville Road, yet when I look on the 1901 census for the address it has the right first names of her family and the right age but the surname is wrong. It has them as Tibby instead of pike. Can anyone tell me why this may be? I know it them as the mothers maiden name was Gardiner and her brother and his family are living there with them. Cheers Jenna |

It does say TIBBY too(or poss LIBBY ) but not Pike! all i can think of is she was born a Pike, her father died (what was the name of her father on the marriage cert?) and her mother remarried and they all assumed his name |

do you know for CERTAIN that you Edith had the brothers and sisters mentioned in the 1901 census Ann/Annie and Thomas are common names and may have moved by 1901 |

Unfortunetly I'm not certain if she had any brothers or sisters, I'm probably barking up the wrong tree here. |

I think maybe you might be - there will be lots of Ediths with parents named Thomas and Ann. People did tend to move about more as houses tended to be rented, i think you have stumbled across a sequence of co-incedences. the Gardiner is slightly making me doubt my theory though! |

Was your Edith born in Hendon district?? These children seem to be born in Willesden, which is a different district?? Can't see a birth reg that fits the others - only Ernest (In Hendon - could you confirm the district name??!). Merry |

Is she married to Thomas Libby??, or has she left her husband (Pike) and moved in with Libby. Might pay to either get a BC for one of the other children and see who the mother is, or else find them on the 1891 census Peter |

It seems as though they changed their name from Pike to Tibby. Did your great-grandmother marry as Pike or as Tibby and who does she have as her father on her marriage cert? If you dig around, you may find out why. Perhaps Thomas Pike took the surname Tibby from another part of the family as the name was dying out. My husband's great-great grandfather changed his name from Dennis McCarthy to James McCarthy and then James Carter. But two of his children remained McCarthy and the others became Carter. I don't know why. nell |

My grandfather had a copy of her death certificate and her maiden name on there is Pike, it's also Pike on the birth cert. Maybe the marriage cert will tell me something. |
