Thanks Helen. I had never even heard of Holloway before this came up. Can't wait to get the certificate. |

My grandmother was born in what is now the Holloway Road area, and is variously described on censuses as being born in Lower Holloway or Islington. nell |

Thanks John. Then I may be closer than I thought in finding the right Mary Ann! I have just ordered the cert. It would make things much simpler if this is right. Rgds Margaret. |

The border of Islington is next to Camden where St Pancras is. And as was said earlier Holloway is about 3 miles away John |

Heather I guess I will have to order the one from Pancras with the Mary Ann and see what it tells me. Thanks. |

Thank you for your replies. I know brides would normally marry in their own churches. It seems a stretch to say Islington is the same as Pancras though from what you say. (They played it safe on the 1901 and both just said LONDON!) Hmmm! Cheers Margaret. |

I just copied and pasted into a reply then put in the returns. With regard to the query, Islington, Pancras and Holloway are pretty close together, but London is a pretty insular place so I would tend to initially believe that the entries for each individual district go together. There may be sub-districts e.g. Somerstown in Pancras, which will help differentiate. |

Spread out a bit: Hi Having a problem narrowing down an area, any advice? Found my great great uncle William EDWARDS in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses, with his wife Mary Ann (yet another one). I am pretty sure this is the right William because his occupation is the same on all the records and I know his father was a jeweller also. On the 1861 census, living at home, he is listed b.1847 Islington and he is an 'assistant jeweller'. On the 1871 census his wife is listed as born in Islington c.1847, on the 1881 she is shown born Holoway c. 1847 and on the 1891 she is born St. Pancras c.1841. William is shown on all as born in Islington c.1848 except the 1891 where he is born 1841. I am trying to find her maiden name. I found only one William EDWARDS marrying a Mary Ann and that was Mary Ann HARVEY at Pancras, Sept. 1866. I also found a birth for a Mary Ann Harvey 13 April 1846 at St. Pancras London. Any advice on whether this could be one and the same? I looked on my maps and district listings and couldn't find a connection for Pancras and the other areas. Before I order the certificate I thought someone might have an idea. Thanks for any help. Margaret (I am in a different time zone so I won't be online again till tomorrow about 3pm uk time, thanks.) |
