Thanks Heather - I was just considering that. I have not been able to find him on any census's until today and I have his name as John on his daughter's marriage certificate but I am now wondering if he was really Patrick so I will have to look through them all again under this name. Anyway, at least it's a lead to follow. Thanks again, Dea x

I ha vent followed this one but I would jump in here and add that many Irish immigrants tended to anglicise their names because of the prejudice at that time. A Patrick could very easily swop his name to John to keep a low profile?

It's an abbreviated name, the dash at the top is the same style used for others. I think it's Patrick check out the P on the following page

O.K. all, MANY THANKS for looking - I was hoping someone could see the name 'JOHN'. Anyway, he IS a brick setter which is what he is meant to be - he DOES have a daughter Margaret of the right age and I suppose being Irish, people may have given him a nickname. It DOES look like 'Patt' to me, maybe with a little t or k at the top. - Someone PLEASE tell me this is am Irish nickname - Pat or Paddy etc. Thanks again for looking. Dea x

Could it be Matthew, as in Matt with a little w at the end? Liz

I thought it was Patrick till I saw the Patrick lower down on the page which is written much more clearly. There's definitely a squiggle that could be a 'ck' written in smaller letters after the tt. nell

It's not Titter! I've compared the writing with other names, and ruled out Patrick and capital T. It looks more like an R at the beginning but its really hard to make out. Have you got Margaret's marriage cert - what does that say? nell

Hello Dea I can't really read the Father's name. Could it be Scott? His wife looks like Margaret, and his three daughters Bridget (15), Margaret (10) and Mary (5). Bridget and Mum and Dad were born in Ireland, and Margaret and Mary were born in Liverpool. Hope that helps. Suzy PS I have got to go out now, but send me your addy and I'll email the image.

I have been looking for Margaret McLoughlin for ages now and couldn't find any trace of her. She married Mark Fenton in 1871, was born c 1852, and had a father who was a 'brick setter' on marriage cert. in Salford, Lancs. By 1881 Mark had a new wife - I presume Margaret must have died? Anyway, I think I have found her on 1861 RG9/2934 - Fathers name (here's where the giggles come in!) = Tittr McLaughlin. Please could anyone look at the image and see what they think. I am DESPERATE for it to be the one. Thanks, Dea x
