Please could you give me your tips, on searching for marriages for your families. Obviously you know the years when the individuals were born and if they were together on the census, but I just wondered do you use a system? on how to narrow down the years without having to use up loads and loads of credits. Your replies would be appreciated, thanks. |

The first thing I look at is if you can spy any children and try 2 years either side. Doesn't always work (I have lots of loose women in my tree) but it is somewhere to start. Pippa |

Look to see when the first child is born and work back from there. It doesn't always work to go back 9 months. Quite a shock when I tried THAT with one of my fathers' sisters!! Other trick is to see how old the couples are in the earliest Census . I take the wife as being 18yrs up and go from there, again judging against the birth of first child Jay |

Yes, and sometimes they marry bloomin years and years later. Often if one of the kids is about to marry! |

It is easier if they appear married pre 1901 as BD & M for that time are on ancestry , well most are, so pin point first child then ferret around a few years either side. Are you stuck on one specifically?if some chuck us some names .... Jess x |

Thats really nice of you to offer Jess, but I have quite a few to do. I would like to ask you one thing, which is the best site to search for Scottish marriages. |

Debbie the best site for scottish marriages is scotlands people, it's a pay per view but well worth it as you can print off the actual certificates. I have the 1881 scottish census if you need any lookups. Georgina. |

If you have the groom's parish but can't see a marriage, look in the Banns, which will show the bride's parish, which is probably where they got married. |

How do you look in the Banns? Is it online? |

The Banns will only be at the Record Office, I'm afraid. Not good news if you're in Oz. |
