Hello Len, I have taken a look as you have asked me to and this is what I see... I kind of read the census return as Christian being the Head (James Gulley's) step son....therefore Ann being Christian's mum and she probably had him at 16 before marrying James....as her name on census return is Gulley....not Hay. The rest of the children I thought would be all Gulley's too as it is always in relation the the Head and it was 'ditto', hence why their names are Gulley on the future census returns.... Christian is the only Hay on the 1851 census....so he had his fathers name, whoever he is.... Maybe we could try IGI for marriage of James Gulley to an Ann in Shadwell? But I do think Len that this is your Christian, but now there is a further mystery as to his father and Ann's maiden name..... Also as Jeanette already suggested......try to ask someone with 1841 to trace Christian born 1829ish in Shadwell area..... What do you think Jeanette? Sal |

and his Death GULLEY, James Record Type: Deaths Age at death: 59 Quarter: June Year: 1872 District: Mile End Old Town County: London Middlesex Volume: 1c Page: 363 (click to see others on page found this on freebmd but age out a little if date right on census she would have been 54 Deaths Sep 1869 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gulley Ann 57 Mile End 1c 428 just had anouther thought in the 1851 perhaps the other children where Gulley's and the person writing it down put wrong surname which means his father could have died quite early on and perhaps they married 1838 as phillip was born 1839 Jeanette |
