There are no deaths for the surname ''Vendt'' in Eng/Wales at all between 1866 and 1920!! Maybe he died in Scotland? Is the spelling certain? Merry

Wow you guys are quick, hehehe Then I just remembered it is daytime for you there. The surname spelling is correct yes as it is my maiden name. Apparently the original is German in origin and was Von Ludvig Vendt. He's a bit of a mystery is old Louis/Ludvig Vendt. Thanks very much for your fast reply, I appreciate that and it was worth a shot.

Ummmmm, I wouldn't think so. I haven''t seen any variation on the name besides Vendt or Von Ludvig Vendt sorry. You know for an uncommon name it's damn hard to research haha.

Hi Karlene In the Scottish records the name Vendt only comes up once. That is in 1901 census and is C Vendt a cook on board a German ship docked in Greenock. Margaret

Kia Ora Karlene :-) This doesn't help much - but if the name was German I would have thought the actual spelling would be Ludwig (pronounced Ludvig). The spelling Ludvig, I have seen more applied to Nordic born males - Denmark etc. And then in full in this order: 'Louis or Ludwig von Vendt'. The 'von' which could also be 'Van', and the 'v' in Vendt could be spoken with a softer 'v' than we say, almost an 'f' sound. The surname could be considered as von Vendt, or Vendt depends who is recording it and where/how - & you can perhaps imagine how an English speaking person, in Census or Register office may interpret the name - vonvent , fonvent, fent, it goes on! I had a look at the image of the 1848 birth posted by Georgina, and played about with it adjusting the colours etc - it looks like 'Vanned' to me. And 'Vanned' would be an acceptable Englishman's idea for the word 'Vendt' - particularly if Louis/Ludvig's parents were not English and had accents. I certainly wouldn';t discount this birth - it's the correct place and timeframe and failing all else would give it a go. The 1851 Census has nothing that I can see on Index Search.....do you happen to know anything about the parentage or siblings of Louis? Cheers Anne

Kia Ora Anne, Wow, that is some info you have there Anne. Very interesting. Old Louis is the family enigma. All I know is that originally the name was von ludvig vendt, from Germany. Here's what I have: Bertram von ludvig vendt born Prussia, 1828 'Removed' from Germany to England. 1848 Louis born in Hackney, London. Parents were Louis and Annika (nee: Garth or Caarth) Siblings unknown. Had been in New Zealand for 7months before marrying Emily Corles in Aug 1884. 1914 Louis joined the Salvation Army trying to get back to Germany to fight in the war, Hello????? raises questions. got as far as England, met and lived with a Sally, wrote to daughters in NZ for money to get back to NZ, they said no, went to Scotland? stranded couldn't get home. We cannot find a death cert for him here. Then to confuse matters entirely. I have found an application for naturalization papers for a Ludvig Vendt for 1911, he was 61 yrs at the time which means he was born around 1950, BUT this one is stated as being from Germany and being resident in NZ for 40 yrs. I am wondering if Louis and Ludvig are one in the same. If not they are so similar in age, twins, close siblings who knows. The whole Germany/England thing is what is confusing here.
