The christian name 'Dolly '?

I wonder if any of you good people can tell me if the christian name DOLLY is actually a name in itself or if it might be a shortened/derivative of another name. Thanks

Can be short for Dorothy or as a name in itself Christine

Just, belatedly, to put the cat among the pigeons... I came across some correspondence where someone referred to their mother as Alice (Dolly) CAMERON nee ROWE I couldn't see any obvious reason for using Dolly instead of Alice - unless it's because her sister was Olive and called Ollie, so the sisters would have been Ollie and Dolly! Dolly could be an abbreviation for Dorothy/Dorothea/Doris/Doreen etc. or a name in its own right or a nickname, like calling someone Doll after the toy. nell

I had a great aunt who always got called Dolly.Her real name was Charoltte. Julie
