Can anyone tell me if you usually had wrong ages in an Irish census. I have a Thomas Collins in 1891 cesus aged 50, in 1901 aged 57. His wife too Mary A Collins aged 39 in 1891 and 43 in 1901.

Betty Boo Yep, my great grandfather's age yo-yo'd up and down on the irish census. Apparently the Liberal reforms enacted between 1906 and 1914, led to the introduction of the Old Age Pensions Act in 1908, which provided a pension of 5s. per week to those aged 70 or over. Therefore it caused some people to be a bit economical with the truth especially when looking at the 1901 and 1911 census. With kind regards Karen

This problem isn't unique to the Irish census! Christine

I thought the Irish census records 1851-1891 were destroyed in the Dublin fire in 1920???? Where did you find yours and what area is still available? Merry (tentatively excited!!)

Is the Irish 1901 census available online or does it have to be viewed at the records office in Ireland? Many thanks, Sheran

Not peculiar to Ireland. Lots of people appear to have aged less than 10 years between censuses! I guess they didn't like to admit to their real age. I'm sure people lie about their ages nowadays too! Kate.

My Great Grandfather aged ten years between the 1901 and 1911 censuses! If anyone is interested in Clare ancestors, the census is online.

Betty Unfortuantely I had to use an irish researcher to help me with my irish research. The 1901 and 1911 Irish census is available at the National Archives of Ireland however it is not in electronic format. However there are extracts of various census and other useful information on the web from the link below (as usual remove brackets). You will need to have some idea of a potential county in order to look at the resources. Choose the county you are interested in using the drop down box on the left hand side and it will show you the data available. http://www(.)censusfinder(.)com/ireland.htm With kind regards Karen
