Thanks guys, cant believe this can be same guy who was a drapers assistant only 10 years earlier. Only just started on this lot as a sidetrack from my direct line so dont know much about them. His sister, my GGM was certainly a bit of a pain, she was an alcoholic who spent GGF's money on men friends and is (according to Auntie) the reason for GGF downfall and eventual suicide. Oh hum, great family I got! So though it seems impossible, may be this prestig..... was her mad brother.

Jess - the 'Ex' is written by a different hand, and you must have seen that kind of thing about a million times before, it is where they wrote on the category of employment to process the information. For example, a servant on the same page as Henry has 'Dom' added after her occupation short for 'domestic'. Kate.

Surely ''Ex'' is for Exhibitionist??? We are in Victorian England, after all, and the civil servants who set up the catagories are bound to be unimpressed by such occupations!! Merry

The 'Ex' won't be short for Extraordinaire, but is short for whatever category of occupation they classed 'prestiagator' and 'clarivoqant' under. Can't quite work out what it would be though. Did your Henry have a wife Adelaide and a mother Sarah? Kate.

Blimey, I was only joking when I said magician. Surely cant be the same guy unless he went mad! Well, family trait and all that ............ Thanks peeps.

Bearing in mind the enumerator couldn't spell Clairvoyant, I don't think he could spell 'prestidigitator' either - i.e. Conjuror, magician?? Also, after both these words, the is something which looks lik 'Ex' - It was often said for a performer of this kind - 'Prestidigitator Extrordinaire' Hope this helps, Dea

Can anyone have a look at my GGM brother on the following ref and see what the **** his occupation is please? My aunt (80) tells me he was in later life a director of Waring and Gillows. I have found him working for obviously a very big concern off Oxford Street in 1881 as a draper's assistant (unfortunately no name of shop given) - so he must have been into flash shops, but this is the only one that seems to meet his criteria in 1891. What is he doing? (Note there is a clairvoyant living in his house!!) 1891: Name: Taylor, Henry J Age: 29 Estimated birth year: abt 1862 Relation: Head Gender: Male Where Born: Camberwll, Surrey Birth Country: England Civil parish: Camberwell Ecclesiastical parish: All Saints Town: Peckham County/Island: London Street address: View Image Condition as to marriage: View Image Education: View Image Employment status: View Image Occupation: View Image Source information: RG12/473 Registration district: Camberwell Sub registration district: Peckham ED, institution, or vessel: 2 Folio: 39 Page: 23 (click to see others on page) GSU Number: 6095583
