I had a couple of units left on FamilyRelatives. Looks like they moved to Lincolnshire - Births registered in October, November & December, 1922: Beckett, Herbert R. Mother’s maiden name: Clapham Registration District: Horncastle Vol 7a, Page 852 There you go, Dianne - that's your starter for ten!!! Gina.

This site may prove useful to you, eventually, but they don't seem to have your areas transcribed yet - or not that 1917 wedding, anyway. http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/ Christine

Diane I know what you mean - you want to be able to do it yourself and good on you. Try putting in www.ancestry.co.uk and this will take you to names. Put in your gt grandad's name 1889 as you stand a better chance of getting some information that way. If you know where he was born etc. then put that in too. From there you MAY be able to find your grandad though I doubt it but you never know. Give it a go and you'll see how people are trying to find him for you. Good luck. Jill

You will need to search through the GRO birth indexes, starting with the quarter in which your great-grandparents got married, looking for any birth with surname Beckett and mother's maiden name Clapham, particularly in the area where you think they would have been living. Can't really tell you when to give up! If you find one (or more), you would have to order the birth certificate(s) to check to see if the parents' names are the right ones. If they had any children before they got married, they should have been registered with the mother's maiden name as their surname (so both surnames listed on the index would say Clapham), but it would be much more difficult to guess if it was going to belong to your family without seeing the certificate. What I mean is, there might be lots of Clapham / Clapham births before the marriage date and you wouldn't know whether to order any of them! Kate.

Dianne, it might be easier to work through an example with you. If you can show us your inof, we can take it from there and explain what we do. I say we, but I'm sure we all have different ways and you will find the best for yourself Jim

Louise2212 Report 11 Dec 2005 15:12

if he was born before 1901 - you could try looking at the 1901 census if after 1911 - look up his birth on the GRO index and it'll give you his mothers maiden name, then look around to see if any other children in the area have the same surname & mothers maiden name if you want to place the details here and somebody may be able to do lookups for you
