There are 46 William Briggs born within 2 years of 1818 on the 1871 census. None of them is born in Kent. So either your William was born in Kent and has been mistranscribed, or he is one of the 46 in the index. nell

Jeanette can I beg another favour? You've kindly found my William Briggs on the 1891 and the 1901 and I've got him on the 1881 Census. I know his date of marriage in 1853 and date of death aged 90 in 1909 in the Steyning Union Workhouse. I was born in the same place but by 1944 it had become Southlands Hospital! Could I ask you to track him on the earlier returns for me? There seems to be an age gap of give or take 20 years between him and his wife Harriett and I wonder whether she was his second wife but that's by the by. They didn't have their first child until 7 years into the marriage but maybe there were earlier children who didn't survive. I believe his Father's name to have been Henry. Gwyneth has very kindly offered to have a look at any Parish records in Folkestone Library for me but as he's variously suggested Shorncliff, Chatham and Kent as his birthplaces, I'd hate to send her on a wild goosechase if he decided in earlier Censi that he was born in a completely different county! Apologies for the rambling! Cherry

Shorncliffe is near Cheriton. I lived there with my first Husband in married quarters. I think the Army Barracks that were there in 1973 were called King George Barracks. I would imagine records would be held in Folkestone or Dover. Connaught barracks are on the hill near Dover Castle. Not sure if this helps. Jenny.

Thank you very much Jeanette and Jim, That's them in the 1891 Census! I've looked at the William Briggs 'Inmate' one before and wondered whether he might have any connection but then again Briggs is such a common name! Much appreciated All the best, Cherry

These placenames suggest a military link. Shorncliffe is near Cheriton. Records may also be in Folkestone or Hythe parish registers.......... I've seen Shorncliffe mentioned in PRs of all 3 of these places.

According to the 1881 Census my GGGrandfather William Briggs (Brigs on the Census) was born 1817 in Shorncliff, Kent I was hoping to try and track him down on the IGI Batch numbers site but haven't got a clue as to which Parish Shorncliff might have come under. Is there a wise soul out there who might be able to point me in the right direction? Cherry
