Does anybody know where I could find out if a wedding took place in a registry office, rather than a church? And if so how would I find out which office is for which area, ie living in West Ham ---Essex, Or Poplar --- London(or is that Middlesex) Thanks for any help . Oh the year is after 1901 and hopefully before the end of 1903. Regards Linda |

If you know the people's names, you can find the wedding indexed in the GRO marriage index. But you would have to order the cert to see if it was in a register office. List of register offices here: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/RegOffice/ nell |

I think you would need to send for the marriage certificate to find out where it took place. If the GRO entry says, for example, that the wedding took place in West Ham registration district then it could have been in any one of these sub districts: Canning Town; Forest Gate; Leyton; North East Ham; North Leyton; Plaistow; South East Ham; South Leyton; Stratford; Walthamstow; Wanstead; West Ham. Each of which would have had their own registry office I would imagine as well as covering a large number of churches. |

There's one in Poplar & Bethnal Green which closed in the 1980s. I have a couple of register office weddings and they say 'in the register office' with the district, so there's no address. Very helpful! nell |

Both would be second marriages, at least I hope they married !!! as they are the grandparents for both my Husband and Myself JAMES COULTON HEDLEY marriage to ELIZA(BETH) JANE WATTS(nee Wright) about 1885 living in Gateshead(Felling) Durham on 1901 census, son James Coulton Hedley born 17/05/1886 --Have birth cert. THOMAS PERYER(first marriage toHannah Sullivan died 1901) then a marriage to ANNA ROWLAND(nee Anne Archer) about 1902 my grandfather Charles Edward Mark Peryer born 23/08/1903 in Poplar London. The 1901 census shows Thomas and Hannah(nee Sulivan living in West Ham Essex, she died in Decq 1901 in West Ham too) I can't find either on Free BMD, 1837 and tried Family Relatives too. If you can find either of these I would be very greatful. Jess has been looking for these 2 marriages for me. I really think they may not have married although they are both named by married name on their respective childrens birth certs. Many thanks Linda Kind Regards Linda |

Have you managed to kill off all the first spouses? I assume you've also looked under maiden and first married names? nell |

Clutching at straws! From Ancestry civil reg: ***BROWN, Elizabeth Jane 1910 June Marriages Newcastle upon Tyne Northumberland GILES, James 1910 June Marriages Newcastle upon Tyne Northumberland ****Hedley, James Charlton 1910 June Marriages Newcastle upon Tyne Northumberland Huddart, William James 1910 June Marriages Carlisle Cumbria Cumberland Lisle, Frances Ann 1910 June Marriages Morpeth Co. Durham Northumberland ROBINSON, Catherine 1910 June Marriages Newcastle upon Tyne Northumberland SPENCE, Frederick Milton 1910 June Marriages Hexham Northumberland WATSON, Nora 1910 June Marriages Newcastle upon Tyne Northumberland I wondered if Elizabeth Jane chose to use the name Brown for some wierd reason - perhaps she had a 3rd husband!!! and that Charlton was a mistranscription of Coulton. I know it's very thin. The alternative is to contact the register offices in the relevant areas and ask if they could find the marriages. nell |

Sorry Nell That one is interesting, but not for James snr as he was widdowed in 1901 census and calling himself Coulton Hedley ---maybe to differentiate himself from his son. James snr died in 1903 as COulton Hedley in Gateshead. BUT I have only just found out recently that James Jnr married in India in 1919 BUT he was a widower so the marriage you have found could be his. I might send for the cert, but after chiristmas now as I don't think I will get it -- do you. Many thanks Linda |
