Hi Geoff, Thanks for the info .The last one Orlando is a distant cousin .not sure of the others. Regards Tony. Hi Pete , That is very interesting as William married Sarah Chambers B1814 Bacton. He never left the Hall to his son Robert as he moved to Lancashire and worked in the pitts. Regards Tony. |

The Historical directories website has a copy of the 1855 Kelly's directory. The entry for Bacton states that: 'A great part of the soil belongs to Mr. Wm. Whistlecraft, (owner of the Hall).' Listed as a farmer at Bacton Hall is John Whistlecraft. Perhaps the Whistlecraft family were 'lords of the manor' Pete |

I looked on The Peerage website and also in The Times Archive (1785-1985) - nothing there I'm afraid..... Did see a George Whistlecraft (known as Joe) of Rickinghall Inferior, Suffolk who was accused of murdering a gamekeeper (Charles E Cornwell) in 1929. The article doesn't give Whistlecraft's age (the gamekeeper was 45) :O(( George was acquitted in 1930........ Just in case he is your rellie! Merry |

I don't know of any internet sites, but Burkes Landed Gentry, Extinct Peerage etc tend to list these things. I'm not up on the niceties of titles, so I don't know what sort of Lady she might have been: baronet's wife, daughter of earl etc. Large libraries tend to have a few volumes, Society of Genealogists have a good collection. If the family made their mark on the area, she or her husband will appear in local records: church rates, land tax etc while the Victoria County History for the county may make mention of the family. Have a look at the National Archives site too, there is a Whistlecraft connected with the manor of Earl Stoneham, Suffolk. |

Having traced my family back to the 1700s and found that my GG/Grandfather Robert Pyett B 1810 married a Susan Whistlecraft B 1809 Bacton. I passed this info on to a 2nd cousin in Scotland whos middle name is Whistlecraft now in his 80s he always thought he was named after a Lady Whistlecraft his mother worked for .My mother also spoke of a Lady Whistlecraft so i now wonder did she exist .Can anyone help solve this mystery.Tried A2A site .Any Suggestions ! Thanks Tony. |
