1851 census lookup needed please?

I have 4 brothers Flewers all missing from the 1851 census and I was just wondering if there was anything going on that could have taken all the boys overseas? They are Samuel 1825, John 1828, Charles 1830 and Matthew 1837 all born Hackney/Islington. Matthew was a Mariner in 1860 and all the rest were usually brickmakers or dock labourers. Samuel's wife and child were in Limehouse in 1851, but the next child born Aug 1851 was not baptised until 1854 along with another child who must have been conceived around Christmas 1853. Charles married in summer 1854 so maybe he too came home around Christmas 1853 giving him time to meet and court his future wife. So I guess what I'm asking is, was there a good reason for 4 young men to be away from their families c1851-53? Thanks, Lyla UPDATE - Have changed the thread title in the hope that someone can post the details of the 3 Flowers born Shoreditch that William found

Lyla, They could have been away ... and listed under another spelling variant such as FLOWERS ... but I guess you've already tried that? Jane

Thanks for your replies. I did try searching by just names and ages etc but couldn't find any of them. Now I no longer have access to Ancestry but I'm sure I did try all variations. The timing of the Kaffir War really does fit so I will have a good google and see what comes up. Thanks so much. Lyla

There was also the Indian uprising where some British/Irish Army were. I googled my rellies name (cos he was missing in 1851) and I came up that he was fighting in India. Sue

Hi Sue. Unfortunately googling the Flewers clan hasn't thrown up any useful leads but I will certainly have a look at India c1850-53 as well. Thanks for that. Lyla

Maybe your Flowers brothers are there in 1851 after all?can you really ignore the Flowers Family shown on Ancestry as being born in Shoreditch Middlesex, which is virtually the next place to Hackney and Bethnal Green? Regards William Russell Jones Cefn Mawr Wrexham.

Hi Lyla, my greatgreatgrandfather was also missing in 1851 but he turned up at a local army barracks with lots of other young men, his wife and children were living with her brother, hope this helps.

Thanks again for your replies. Yes they usually are transcribed as Flowers (plus Fluwers, Hense, Husman, Stevens and many others). There were about 4 other Flewers families in London that I am also trying to connect. Would really appreciate the details of the 1851 Shoreditch family as I dont seem to have that one. Sandra, that is the oldest brother Samuel in the 1871 census. Thanks Lyla

Thanks William Would you mind posting the details? Or if they are in London I just need the page reference numbers or addresses so that I can look them up for myself on my census cds. Many thanks Lyla

Hi William Thanks very much. They are not the boys that I am searching for but I have added them to my collection in case I can fit them in to one of the other families. I couldn't find Charlie at 1534F528 as my discs only go up to 1534F450. How annoying! Thanks again for all your help. Lyla
