Thank you all for your help. I cannot believe I made such a simple mistake in reading Bristol instead of Brixton. Should be able to make some progress now. Thanks again x

On the 1901 Census is states that the Son 'William Willett'resided at the address '180 Napier Road Gillingham Kent'. Civil Parish being Gillingham, District of Hoo. It does indicate that he was born in 'Bristow' or Bristol as I read it. Is there any more info that I can give?

Georgina I've just checked that image using ancestry and the place of birth for William Willett is Brixton in London not Bristol - do you know from the names of his in-laws. Louisa and John taylor, that this is your man?

Have you tried looking on websites like FREEBMD etc? Try looking in the county Bristol comes under (Gloucestershire?) as he may be born in a different district

Georgina can you give more details of the entry you have found in 1901 as it may be posisble to trace him backwards in the census' and get a more accurate birthplace/year for his father Zoe

Trying to find copy of birth certificate for my great great great grandfather. His name was William Willett and I have found an entry on the 1901 Census records for his son also named William Willett showing his age as 30 at the time. His son tried to obtain a copy of his dads birth certificate in 1927 by contacting the General Register Office. This came back saying no entry for birth stated to be in Bristol during years 1869 and 1867 to 1871. I have hit brick wall as this is the only information I can find. Can only assume he was born in Bristol. I know that registering of births was not compulsory priorto the year 1875 and cannot turn to Baptism records as have no idea where baptised. Any help would be much appreciated as fairly new to this game. Georgie
