on a death cert of a child of 4 it says cause of death ,sudden spasm of the Glottis, there was an inquest , but when I googled these words it says hiccups surely she would not have died of that

Just guessing here but I wonder if it was a bad asthma attack?! Cheers, Horatia

Valerie if you google ''spasms of the glottis'' there are quite a few cause, Asthma being one. Georgina.

hi Georgina I did google but the results I got said hiccups, unless I read it wrong which is possible as I am tired, I suppose thats why there would have been an inquest as it was sudden. Think I will go to bed , Goodnight all

While it is possible to die of Hiccups I think that it would be a long process. I would have thought that if the child suffered from Asthma then this would have been noted on the death certificate (unless it was their first attack.) However, could it be that the child suffered from Anaphylaxis? In severe cases this results in the throat closing down.

Hi Valerie Noticed on Google an entry for acute Laryngitis which can result in a 'spasm of the Glottis' which causes death by asphixiation. What a horrible way for a child to die especially as laryngitis is easily treated with antibiotics. Helen

thanks for all your inputs yes I agree what a horrible way to die . Especially when these days it probably would not have killed her, along with other things people died of it would have been treatable. Quite often doing this hobby gets very upsetting its strange how we cry for people gone long ago isnt it ???

I've been puzzling for sometime over my elusive gt gt grandfather William's death. His death cert said he died of 'chronic laryngitis' which I interpreted as 'he has had a sore throat for a long time', but perhaps he also died through choking? nell

Nell I would not have thought you could die of Laryngitis , after all that just means you have lost your voice doesn it ,sounds like he died of a similar thing to this little girl, how awful Thats the one thing I worry about how I will die dont want to suffer thanks

A blood relative of mine also had laryngitis as a cause of death on his death certificate (died aged 7 years). Cheers, Horatia
