Please could someone look for a Charles Bell (born 1842 in Horncastle, Lincs). I'm trying to fill the blanks relating to his other family members and their backgrounds (job etc). His parents were Benjamin & Mary Bell. Thanks xx If this helps, this is them on the 1861 census. What's a victualler?

Esta

Licensed Victualler - A Tavern or Innkeeper or Publican- term still used today for someone who runs a Pub (Public House)

So in 1851 he had all of his family working the pumps behind a bar and then by 1861 he had bought a farm with 68 acres and was tilling the land - bit of a big career change!! If only I could find out what his father did for a living!

Originally, a Hostler was the host of an Inn or (H)ostelry. Later became the man employed to look after the horses of the visitors from http://rmhh(.)co(.)uk/occup/ remove brackets

RIght .......your not going to find a marriage cert as they married before 1837. There are children born after 1837 so these BC would give you the full names of parents ( Emma b.1850 / Jane b. 1848 are 2 possibles I found ) ...........Freebmd.org have you looked on the IGI at family search. There is this marriage Familysearch.org BENJAMIN BELL Male Family -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages: Spouse: MARY MILLS Family Marriage: 16 SEP 1828 Horncastle, Lincoln, England Area and dates fit - you would need to see if the BC backs this up maybe but it's something to look into.Doesn't help with the occupations question though !! Andy take a look at the IGI on familysearch.org It seems to list the christenings for the children............if you haven't already of course..:) There are a couple of christenings for Benjamin Bells in Lincoln* but I don't know the area to know if the place names are close.

Thank you, I've never really used the IGI as it has seemed from previous messages that it can't really be trusted. I'll see what I can find though, thanks. Andy

Andy the IGI is a VERY good starting point, especially for info before 1837.........but it's like any info you get it needs verifying and backing up to 100% sure it is correct. I use it all of the time and although I've found mistakes it's usually been with dates / ages...............The names and Places have never been a problem ( Yet ) It's definatly in my top 5 sites that I use most!
