As I said, like today, the woman would give the more detailed places of birth and dates!

I think the (more or less) matching dates & places of birth are too much of a coincidence. Personally I would go for it! Angela

Never thought of that Angela - Thanks! But..... lol George on the boat was born Wigan, Lancs George at home was born Appley Bridge Lancs Oooh wait a minute - anybody got a map? Are the 2 places near each other?

Dont see that as a problem really? I mean if the men were travelling down the canal wouldnt they fill in the form where they were on the night of the census? If mum did fill in the form at home, you can see how much more detailed hers is than the husbands! Or am I missing something (not unusual for me).

Good thinking Heather but... the home is Blackburn Lancs and the boat is Shipley West Yorkshire!! I know William was born Skipton Yokrshire and his father Henry was born Lancs See why I'm stuck and confused!! lol

Looks to me like they are the same people - perhaps they were on the barge for the night & the people at home misunderstood the instructions & thought they had to put down all people LIVING at the address (just a thought!) Angela

Oh brilliant.! lol Do you think - that possibly they have been entered twice on the census. Once by auntie who did the form at home and again by uncle on the boat?

Hi Heather Sorry forgot to add occupations - on both census records they are Barge/Boatmen (either captain or mate) On the first one it states George as married but no wife there. The ages for William/Willie, George (Uncle) and George's son John are the same on both records! Also nan/s birth cert state her father Henry is a boatman

Just realised that both of these Williams are shown as Nephew, so you have a slight problem then as neither fathers will be your nans! Does barge industry occur in her family? What was her dad and mums names? Where does her certificate show they lived?

I've been trying to find my nan's brother William Fyles in the 1901 census, but I have found two born same time, same place and both living with his uncle of the same name. How do I find out which is correct?? See below for details. Thanks Manda :-)
