Maurice Quite a few bmds didn't get put on the GRO index. It doesn't mean that she died in WW2. She might have emigrated, or married (I have a marriage which never got onto the GRO index either). nell

Nell, I have searched all years on 1837 with no luck. But if you consider the number of people killed in London and Coventry alone during the 2nd WW thousands were killed ,many were literally so badly burnt or blown to pieces that identification at that time was impossible. The least that could have been done would be to form a list of known missing persons, It is a chance that IF Frances was reported missing under these circumstances by a relative. I would need to look no further. Maurice

Where have you got the idea that she is missing presumed dead? Unless you have checked all the marriage indexes on GRO and ditto the deaths (we are talking decades!) I don't see that you can assume she was a victim of the War. nell

Looking at the parish records around Hythe in Kent I found many burials of unidentified victims of shipwrecks. She COULD have been lost on a coastal vayage.

I must have been dreaming to miss the Birth cert, thank you I will send for that at least. But what about the missing presumed dead angle? One thought I have is the Salvation Army ?they used to sarch for missing people. I will try them to see if they have archives. There MUST have been lists of 'Bombing dead' missing persons somewhere. Well she was born, but either reg late, or the wrong date in the bible!! Births Sep 1878 Nunn Frances Esther Tunbridge 2a 607 I had a similar problem with a woman, born about 10 years before yours........it didn't occur to me that she might have stayed single and stayed a servant all her life!! She didn't even move from the house she was in on the 1901 census!! In the end I came across her death completely by chance.....her employers, for whom she had worked for about 40 years, had put a death notice in The Times newspaper for her!! I bet none of her immediate family knew that (because they wouldn't have read that paper!), so was I the first relation to see it over 60 years later?? Merry

You could try looking on the 1911 Canadian census. You could put up a Trying to find message. You could look on the Ellis Island site. The possibilities are endless. People, particularly servants, are often very mobile. She may have emigrated, moved round the country with successive employers, married - at any age, taken a common law husband and assumed his surname, have entries recorded incorrectly. Good luck!

Frances birth is only written in Copper plate writing along with her brothers and sisters in our family bible. Sorry I should have said that before. Thank you for your interest, 1901 she is on RG 13 piece 903 folio 27 page18. As a Witness she is shown clearly as Frances Nunn She was definately born ! I have a cert For Frances Elizabeth Nunn - marriage Hull March 1911 - wrong - one I have also had the Medway one which is sadly also wrong. Regards Maurice

Another possibility is emigration? Dja know of anyone else in the family that had already left Britain and that she could be joining? Victoria (42 years resident in Australia!)

Even with a date of birth I couldn't find Frances Esther's birth!! And the only marriage that I thought possible is this one - View Record Folsham, Frederick Stephen C 1903 December Marriages Medway (1837-1941) Kent View Record Lowe, Elizabeth 1903 December Marriages Medway (1837-1941) Kent View Record McNair, Robert 1903 December Marriages Medway (1837-1941) Kent View Record Nunn, Frances 1903 December Marriages Medway (1837-1941) Kent When was she a witness (and using her maiden name) to her brother's wedding? Of course, if she married her death would show up with her married name. Victoria

I have a problem, which is not unusal. A relative was born in Kent, Frances Esther Nunn 18 Feb 1878, She is shown on the 1901 census at Cozliegh Withyham Sussex - Parlour Maid Domestic. She last appears in Coatham York as a witness at her brothers wedding from then on I can find no trace of her. Now it is likely that she returned home to Kent or Sussex after the wedding. Suppose that she was like many, many, other people blown to bits by a bomb during a war, someone somewhere would miss her (me at the moment) where is she listing as missing presumed dead ? Maurice
