It is more common than you would have thought...also it wasnt uncommon to marry a brother or siter of a late husband/wife. Suzanne

I've got loads of same surname marriages. A couple are just coincidence, but the majority are cousins of some degree. To your query - the only Coles/Coles marriages I can find with a name like Caroline are in the 1860s.

I would also check 1922 as they may not of actually married until the birth of their child. (I have a couple who had three children before they eventually married and even I went to my own grandparents wedding when I was 14 years old!) Suzanne

Have you got the death of Caroline Coles? (might be an avenue worth persuing) Suzanne

My partner's grandfather's surname was Götz. Both his parents were Götz, as was his father's mother - so 3 of his 4 grandparents were Götz - all unrelated so far as we know (although since they were all from the same little village, no doubt they'd turn out to be cousins a few generations further back).

Perhaps they married earlier than 1914? I should think it would be worth searching 1912 and 1913 on the GRO indexes because FreeBMD only goes up to about 1911. I assume you have already tried on FreeBMD? Kate.

Hi Nicky! I also had the same problem as you - same surname marriage - could not find a marriage for them anywhere! Came to the conclusion that with them having the same names they didnt bother getting hitched! ;o) Kim

Following on with an earlier suggestion, it might be worth while looking at the cross referenced surnames and seeing if William may have married a Caroline X, then checking whether Caroline married an X. One other possibility is that the question asked was misunderstood by Caroline - but that is no help at all!
