Rigth Whitechapel is a district in it's own right........ sorry was a district, as it was abolished 1st Jan 1926, but it was a district when your death occured. Whitechapel Created 1st July 1837. Abolished 1st January 1926 (incorporated into Stepney district). In Middlesex until 1889. Sub-districts : Aldgate; Artillery; Goodman's Fields; Mile End New Town; Spitalfields; Whitechapel; Whitechapel Church; Whitechapel North. GRO volumes : II (1837-51); 1c (1852-1925). Holy Trinity Minories, Mile End New Town, Norton Folgate, Old Artillery Ground, Old Tower Without, St. Botolph without Aldgate, St. Katharine by the Tower, Spitalfields, Tower of London, Whitechapel. Registers now in Tower Hamlets district. registers are now held by Tower Hamlets who I knwo do deal with family history certificates.. Their details are....... Bromley Public Hall, Bow Road, London, E3 3AA. Tel: 020 7364 7883 or 7364 7884. Fax: 020 7364 7885. E-mail: [email protected] Ps Tower Hamlets were wonderful when I had to call them with a query. Try calling them before you send a chq, and ask them for advice...

From ONS site The minimum details required for a search to be carried out are the full names and approximate date of event. You can order and pay for your certificates online. If ordering by post, phone or fax, make cheques and postal orders payable to 'ONS'. Payment from abroad should be by international money order, cheque or draft (payable in London) in favour of 'ONS' and should always be expressed in sterling. If you are applying by post, please do not send cash. Payment can also be made by Visa, Access, Mastercard or Switch. If applying at the Family Records Centre (FRC) you may also pay by cash. Please note - if you do not make your cheque payable to 'ONS' we will be unable to process your order and your cheque will be returned to you therefore delaying your application. Correspondence should be addressed to General Register Office, PO Box2, Southport, Merseyside, PR8 2JD If you require a certificate you can order by: Tel: +44 (0) 845 603 7788 (8am to 8pm Monday to Friday. Saturday 9am to 4pm) Calls are charged at the cost of a local call. Fax: +44 (0) 1704 550013 Online / Postal / Phone / Fax Fees for events in England and Wales Standard Service Full certificate of birth, marriage, death or adoption £11.50 Full certificate of birth, marriage, death or adoption (with GRO reference supplied) by post, phone or fax £8.50 Full certificate of birth, marriage, death or adoption (with GRO reference supplied) ordered online via the internet £7.00 So you can order it by post but it will cost you £11.50 Address is General Register Office, PO Box2, Southport, Merseyside, PR8 2JD you can download the application form from here... http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/research/obtainingcertificates/certificatefees.asp#0

you can still rewqest it from ONS Southport, with out the ref but think it cost more, £11 I believe. If you are certain of where the death happened then you can write to the reg office covering that area, however some reg offices do not deal with genalogy certificates. will see what i can find xxx

hello jane Thank you but I do not have 1837 on line so was hoping to find postal address to send for it. Regards Maureen

Jane Report 15 Jan 2006 13:39

Maureen, Many folk use 1837online to get the GRO ref - if you know the person's name and year of death, you should only have to look at 4 pages ... one for each Quarter of the year. Whitechapel is a reg district in its own right, so you should recognise the entry. Good luck Jane
