Rachel yes she is on 1861 and 1871 with them but disappears after that, Glen know what you mean I have one mother-in-law at 3 different addresses on one census night, she must have been one interfering woman. Lunar I am going to ask if someone can please check 1841 for me thanks for all your replies

Could it be that the granddaughter was the child of a adopted child of the couple? otherwise there could be an older child still who married (girls could marry at 12 and boys at 14). Have you been able to cheak who was in the family in 1841? It might help to see what other children where there at the time.

Take my case, one branch of the family must have had an aversion to people knowing where they live, every census night they seem to be visitors at someone else's address. Might explain my itchy feet, thanks granny!!!!!!!!!! Glen

Valerie Have you tried tracing the grand-daughter through to the next census to see if she's living with her parents? If you want to post some of their details on here, we could help look for them.

thanks for that Liz ,and Jane you could be right I did find a marriage for someone with this mans name but a different bride so assumed I was wrong, I shall look into that , trouble is I was going to send for her birth cert, so I could see who who parents were, but trawled through 1837 last night and could not find her some of their images are very poor maybe I will ask for a look up.

Valerie, Remember it is 'relationship to head' that is quoted - if we're looking at a previous marriage, perhaps the 'head' has been married before ... with offspring who have left home? I'd lay bets on it being an 'invisible' additional grown-up child here! Anyway, good luck!! Jane

When did the Head of the family marry, and how old were he and his wife when they married? Either of them could have had a child before they married, whether legitimate or not, who could be the parent of this little one. Liz

she was born in 1842 after the head of the family married, their eldest daughter was born in 1833 so the dates would be all wrong

Are you sure there were no children previous to the one you currently believe to be the eldest? When did the (grand)parents marry in relation to the birth of their eldest child? Alternatively, could one of the (grand)parents have been married before? Liz x

Hi thanks for your reply ,I have found the other daughter and she is not married either ,and the grand daughter was born only 10 years after the eldest child was born so they would have been much too young too have a child

The Head and his wife may have had an older child now living elsewhere who is parent to the grandchild. This has happened in my tree. Liz
