Right, have found Millicent on Ancestry, mothers maiden name is Chambers, so what do i know so far....... Millicent Hay ,district, quarter, mothers maiden name and GRO ref. Have found both Millicents' marriages,so have GRO refs for those as well. So presumably the best way for parents christian names would be Millicents' birth cert.Yes? Glen (it's been a long day already via Aberdeen) |

Thanks Dea,and hello again again Pete, Mother Millicent Hay b Lincoln,April quarter, 1924 d 1990 Lincoln Suggested names for g'parents, William Hay and Lilly/Lilly Chambers. Marriage William Hay to Lily Louisa Chambers Lincoln 1907 on freebmd There are births for Lilly spelt both ways, (1884 to 1886)and the 1901 has two entries for Lilly/Lily visiting in St Mary Le Wigford,Lincoln and also at Nth Scarle, both abt 1885. 1891 Lily abt 1885 shows in Nth Scarle. I cannot remember how i got this bit but i did find 8/9 births to a Hay/Chambers pairing from 1911 through to 1921,all different years. If granny is actually Lilly/Lily then can work from certs a lot easier,if William is grandad then i think i've got him worked out for the time being. Sorry for being a bit thick, grannys' spelling is causing some headaches. |

Glen Id get your mothers birth cert as this will give her mothers maiden name. Her marriage cert will just have fathers name. Jacqui |

It is Lincolnshire. Mother was born in Lincoln,in 1924,i have the GRO for her birth, her 1st marriage was 1946,the second in 1949,i have the names of both husbands. She died in 1990. Her mother (and this is who i'm trying to verify) could be born in Lincoln or possibly Nth Scarle,(still Lincolnshire but births for Scarle are usually registered in Newark) Granny and grandad would both be born in the 1880's. I have had some details from the 1901 and this is how i discovered the duplicated names, although everything so far points to g'parents marryimg in 1907. I know that really i should have verified thie details when i was told them, but my source said later he couldn't be entirely sure who his grandparents were, and i wasn't really planning to verify my tree via certs quite so soon, the lesson has been well and truly learnt.LOL. So to recap none of the above are living,it's to actually verify grandparents names initially, then look at what i learn from there. Glen |

Where in the country are you looking. Some local BMD indexes have been made available online. These will have the bride and groom listed on the same entry. Staffordshire, Cheshire, North Wales, lancashire Yorkshire are all starting to get stuff online. It may be worth checking to see if you can get some luck here! http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/ Select the county from the dropdown on the left side and then press the button labelled 'county'. There may be a FreeBMD county site just for you! Pete |

Thanks for that. It's nigh on impossible for me to ask living rellies as it's my birthmothers parents i'm trying to sort out. The names i have been given by one of the grandchildren are 'probably' correct, but he isn't 100% sure. Which cert would be best to get to confirm the grandparents names?I'm torn between mothers birth certificate and her marriage certificate.Mother did marry twice in space of 3 years. I'm working on a tight budget (aren't we all?) I have 3 possible results for granny on look ups and two for grandad, what would be best to narrow the choices? |

You also have to quote the Quarter of the year i.e. Jan-March, April-June, July -Sep., or Oct - Dec. Dea x |

Hi Glen Yes, you will have to quote the district as well (it's one of the mandatory fields). Not a daft question at all - we all had to start somewhere! Mandy :) |

Thanks,i omitted the district part in my question by mistake. When ordering certificates with the GRO reference,do you just have to qoute the volume and page number? eg 7a 789,or do you also have to quote the district of the birth? Dumb question i know, but it's my first cert order. Glen |
