Jim, will ring the cambridgeshire Records office in the morning. Heather, As for the street name, it is listed as 16 /17 Market street Cambridgeshire. No place name. Just St Andrew the great parish. I will have to do some diging around. Thanks again Diane x

Well it may not be there now - did you find a street address for it? Or be a trendy gay club or something if its in Cambridge. You could try googling for it and for pub societies in Cambridge or again, ask the local records/archives if they have any old photographs. If you are really lucky, and I have been, you may find it is still in use now (especially if its a hotel) and you may get a great deal of history from the brewery who owns it - even if it is just a website.

The Cambidgeshire Records Office has a card index of publicans - compiled from the licensing records. They are very helpful. Might give you info over the phone if they are not busy. Jim

Sorry Diane, wasnt here but I see you have been helped. It is a confusing site to be honest. But when you find someone and see their entry, it makes up for all the faffing about! Do let us know how you get on. And yes, I seem to remember there is a St Andrews in Cambridge itself. Good luck.

If you have the pub name and the town, you can probably google them and turn up a decent photo or old drawing of it.

Diane, just one thing, Market Street Cambs. Is there a town missing from that? Cambs would mean Cambridgeshire, not Cambridge city. The old directories are what we would call Yellow Pages type publications. And yes, a licensed victualler would be known as a publican (Ive got about a dozen of them). In fact, you may be able to get his licence details from the local records/archives.

Thank s for that, He is listed as licensed victualler selling sprits and wine He did live in a pub Called THE ANGEL in Market Street ,Cambs, so thats why i said he was a publican. is that right ? Also say he was town counciller. Would he still be in DIRECTORY Diane.

Heather Report 19 Jan 2006 12:08

Well as a publican, he should be in a local directory. You could try historicaldirectories website. And then if you dont find anything after googling for him, Id mail the local family history archives and ask for info.
