What I mean is, I have some rellies who are invisible on the 1851.1861 census on Ancestry. Methinks thy're mistranscribed probably!! If I get their address of a birth certis=ficate can I search the address on Ancestry instead? Joan |

Yes, but it can be quite laborious. You have to search through the enumerators districts. If you want to PM me I will talk you through it. Ian |

Joan No not really. Only the 1881 is address searchable. If it was a small village you could trawl through all of the images for that place to see if you can find it. Not feasable with a large area. Its probably mistranscribed. Try using just the first name, year of birth plus minus 2 years and the town of birth. Leave out the county of birth as these are often listed wrongly. Margaret |

Hi folks, thanks for your replies. I was so hoping I could, sounds like i've just wasted £7 then!!! sob!! I was hoping the birth cert would crack it! I have tried just Christian names, dob etc years either way & all that, not a sniff of them anywhere until 1861 when the mother turns up, then again not until 1871 when they have all dispersed anyway!! I can't understand where they could have gone. My problem is they were (hopefully) in the Battersea/Bermondsey/Rotherhithe area. This often gets shoved under Surrey/Middlesex/London etc. I have this massive brick wall & I don't think I'll ever find them. :0S Joan |

JOan, THe FRC has indexes for the census'so if you can find someone going who you can give the address to they can narriw down which film numbers cover that area and you can search ancestry by film number. If it's LOndon I think they have street indexes for all census now. Zoe |

When looking through the 1841 and 1851 in our area, it seemed that only the larger roads and streets had numbers, mainly those with shops, david |

Intelligent lateral thinking Joan - and possible if not easy! Well done - and good luck. I must use the same sort of thinking to break through my brick wall I think. Victoria |

Louisiana That's intereseting, I wonder what they were up to?? Surely they should appear at an address somewhere though, even if they weren't at home? I am hoping that I will find them as the mother was about to give birth in 1841so hopefully wasn't able to get about too much!! lol Thanks, Joan |

Hi Dawn! Sadly I tried that already (pretty easy, uncommon name fortunately) still no trace of them. Ancestry have either missed them completely or mistranscribed them. I have already found lots of mine mistranscribed so I know it happens!! Joan |

Hi Joan I could not find a family on the 1881 census, mother and three girls, and with a name of White spent hours and weeks looking. Had them in 1871 It turned out she remarried between the two census, and the three girls were under new husbands name in 1881. In 1891 and 1901 the girls are back to using White, so don’t give up as I nearly did. Kath |

Hmmm, Now there's a thought Kath!! Thing is I can't find a death for the husband on Free BMd at least, I could try Ancestry now........ She wasn't a widow in 1861, per the census. He could have died after I suppose. I did try her first name & dob only, still no trace though!! I await my certificate & will be back!! lol Joan |
