Keith That looks like a definite possibility. Probably worth sending for the certificate. If she died outside St Pancras the local officials wouldn't be familiar with the name.

Yes, my great grandma married twice and used her maiden name (or at least a variation on it) both times, status spinster both times, but one was in Worcester and the other in London 19 years apart. I don't know yet whether hubby one was dead before she married hubby two, but she was with number two for ten years and two kids before they married!

Brian You mean this chap married 3 times? Sounds dodgy to me! Did he have large insurance policies on his wives? Sorry, feeling flippant. I had a gt gt grandfather who married 3 times and fathered umpteen children. His third wife was the same age as one of his daughters by his first marriage (my gt grandmother). nell

Ah, St Pancras....the bigamy centre of the world!! Sorry, I shouldn't be flippant about this problem. My hubby's rellies moved to St P after generations in rural Huntingdonshire. It went to their heads!! If they died they were not registered, if they married they committed bigamy (though not at the same church!) -in fact tracing them has become a total nightmare!! (over 10 years of slogging!) Now I've got that off my chest I'll have a look round!! Merry

Nell, You are right, that was his first marriage, to Emma's sister, my ancestor. If I'm right about the child Emma's middle name may have been Maria, but no death under Maria Gorrod either.

1) The name may have been misspelt 2) Emma may have been recorded under another name (e.g. a middle name) 3) Emma's death was not registered 4) Emma didn't die, and John committed bigamy I have a rellie that married in 1871 and again in 1889 but I can't find the first bride and he is listed as a batchular on the second marriage certificate

Nell Sorry, I just added info about a child in July 1852, so unless it was a posthumous birth I omitted the earlier quarters. As both marriages were at the same church I would tend to discount bigamy.

Brian She could have died between Oct 1851 and Jun 1852. It's also possible her death was never registered, or that the local register office copy never reached the GRO. You could try asking for a National Burial Index look up. Perhaps she didn't die and he committed bigamy! nell

On 19 October 1851 John Gorrod, corkcutter, married Emma Laidler in Old Church, St Pancras. On 8 September 1855 John Gorrod, corkcutter, married Catherine Pellet in Old Church, St Pancras. I have both certificates. I believe they had a child, Thomas Ralph Laidler Gorrod in 19 July 1852. I have just been through 1837 from Jun qtr 1852 to Jun qtr 1855 and can't find a death for Emma Gorrod. Any ideas?
