If you have qtrs missing try opening another qtr and at the top of the screen eg: you are here: search>englang & wales, birth index: 1837- 1983> 1940> jan-feb-mar>a click on the year and it should now display all the qtrs. Click on the qtr you want then either enter the page no you are looking for or trawl through them. Found loads of mine this way. Hope this helps Misty :0)

Also try not putting in a first name. some pages have a very large range or a very mall range. if you check them you may find that a latter addition has been transcribed as the end of the rainge.

Is anyone else also finding that there are 3 quarters or more for the same year for the same time e.g. Jan/Feb/Mar is there three times for the same year and on checking the names begin with the wrong letter because the image is hard to read? I have gone through waiting for so many images to load only to find they begin with the wrong letter altogether, or do not include the name I am looking for because they are before or after. Is there any solution?

I didn't know one could do this on Ancestry - I wonder what else I am missing. Do these pages cover all the GRO records If so, why am I transcribing for Free BMD? Sylvie

Hi, If you follow Misty's instructions and make your first search, after that click on the link on the left of the year and you will get all the years in the database listed - if you then click on the year you get the quarters for that year. Click on a quarter and you get an alphabetical list to click on. You will get quite fast at estimating which page to choose! I found this a whole lot quicker than going back to the search box each time although you do have to remember to click the year to get the next quarter - I found that I sometimes clicked on the first link ínstead of the year and then couldnt remember which year I was in as the links aren't changing colour to tell you where you have been. Hope that helps somebody and that it made sense. Please dont stop transcribing for FreeBMD - it is a different way of searching and makes a very good cross reference. Especially as ancestry dont appear to have some of the indexes between 1866 and 1880 at the moment. Caroline

Yes, Sylvie - please don't stop with FreeBMD! The Ancestry pages are not fully indexed, unlike FreeBMD - therefore it's a long slog to find anyone on there (and you need to have an idea of who you're looking for, too - can't just do blanket searches as on FreeBMD). Also, for pre-1911 marriages, you can't find the spouse of a marriage from the pages on Ancestry - that's when FreeBMD is so great as you can search it on district/volume/page, rather than just surname. And, the quality of the FreeBMD transcribing is heaps better than Ancestry too! Keep up the good work! Richard

Think i've still got two quarters missing for 1967 though despite trying the search by letter. I have found my birth entry, but can't find the entry for my post adoption registration. I presume that although my birth was registered in the oct/dec qtr 1966,amd my short cert for 'new' name is dated august 1967,it would be a july or oct qtr entry, but nothing for my letter after first two quarters for 1967. Glen I think you will find that the registrations for adopted children do not appear in the indexes. If you note the page number by the side of your original entry has been crossed out and a reference number entered by hand. This is because the entry has been put into the adopted childrens register and no access is allowed.
