Just to give the pot another stir - Coal Miners were exempt from call-up as it was an essential industry. (But that didnt stop some Coal miners signing up, of course) Olde Crone

Many thanks to you all for the information, I don't know much about the wars, my father couldn't serve as he had TB and I never met any other rellies who went to war. I've tried to follow lots of the other threads and am starting to understand a bit more, but history was never my best subject. Thanks again Jo

In WW1 the max age for conscription was gradually raised as more men were killed. i think the final conscription age in 1917/18 was 40. As nell said, lots of men older than this fought, but they would have been volunteers. Merry

Lots of boys under legal age and men over 40 fought in WW1. If your chap fought in WW1, I would suggest you look for him on the Medal Roll Index on the National Archives site. nell

Thanks for the advice, I haven't found him in 1901 because I don't know who he is!!! Sorry I'm really clutching at straws, i'm working through a long list of possible suspects, trying to eliminate then. Just thought I may find some clues following a different tack - getting desperate. Thanks again Jo

Hi Louise By 1915, 'my man' would have been 31 and not likely to have been 'called up'??. I suspect they would have wanted younger men? He was born 1884, he was a miner after 1919, just wondering what he may have done in between - any ideas??? Jo

no national service until WWII in 1914, you volunteered to join the army until about 1915/1916 when conscription was introduced

Please could someone explain who would have done National Service (if that's what it was called) , or who would have been sent to was, what ages and which wars they would have gone to. I'm clutching at straws, trying to fill in missing years for a man born 1884, who appeared at the end of the ? 1914-18 war. How would I find where he may have been or is it another 'needle in haystack' job. Thanks in advance for any help. Jo
