Hi Daniel, If the marriage is in sheffield, the volume number will be 9c. most of my lot are registered in Sheffield and its always been 9c. regards, claire

I see this creates another problem the Volume Number is different on the actualy Ancrestry Images it looks like 8c but FreeBMD have it at 9c but I can see how it could have been mistaken for a 9 when I think it is and 8 so what would happen there?

What happens is you pay the £7 for the certificate and order it giving the name Martin Dickinson, with the reference numbers. You then put in Elizabeth as the bride's first name as a checking point. When they find the certificate for Martin Dickinson, IF the bride's name is Elizabeth then they just send out the certificate. If the bride's name is NOT Elizabeth, then they don't send a certificate and refund you £4, keeping the other £3 to cover their costs for the time spent. Kath. x

Thats a good idea Suzy I didn't think of that. So do they charge for the search and tell you what they find?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 25 Jan 2006 18:56

It could be. The best thing would be to order the marriage certificate but give the bride's name as Elizabeth as a checking point. That way it will only cost you the search fee of £3 if it's the wrong one, instead of £7 for the wrong certificate. Kath. x

So it can't be the right person that I've found then.

Daniel Have you tried looking for Elizabeth DOUGHTY, the surname of the niece living with them in 1871? She may be hers rather than his niece. Suzy

What makes you think that he married in 1865 if you haven't got the marriage certificate? The one registered in Sheffield is the only Martin Dickinson registered in 1865. Kath. x

Thought it would be somewhere closer like that.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 25 Jan 2006 18:46

If they lived in Mexborough when they married, then the marriage would be registered in the Doncaster area. Kath. x

Yorkshire area possible Sheffield Martin in 1861 is living in Mexbrough, and in 1871 they are both living in Mexbrough. I found Martin on ancestry I think for a marriage for 1865 which was registered at Sheffield. So it might not even be him i'm not sure if Mexbrough is near Sheffield. Dan.

My Great Great Great Grandfather Martin Dickinson married twice once in 1865 and again in 1878. I'm assuming that this first marriage ended because his wife died. I'm trying to find out his first wife Elizabeth's maiden name. I've tried cross referencing on FreeBMD but she doesn't seem to appear. Any other methods apart from buying the certficate that I can do at this stage? I cannot find her on ancestry either. Dan.
