One of those mysteries of life i suppose, bless the old girl, she certainly left much to ponder over. It's actually my bm and it seems she made some difficult times for herself over the years, pregnancy and marriage seem to run hand in hand at the same time through her life. Rellies eh? Glen

thanks Kath, Glad it made sense to someone.

It makes sense to me Helen. What you say would be correct if it wasn't for the fact that Glen says the birth was actually 3 weeks AFTER the 2nd marriage. Perhaps the child's father wasn't either of the 2 husbands - hence no father's name mentioned on the certificate. In the index for the birth, were there any other numbers after the vol. and page numbers (which usually suggest that the birth has been re-registered at a later date with another surname).? Kath. x

It does not make any sense. The only thought i have is that the second husband refused to have his name on the cert.

I am probably confused on this post- but here goes!! Although the birth of the third daughter was registered just after the 2nd marraige, if the birth took place just prior to the marraige then your mother would still have had her previous husband's surname- and unless the father was present during registration your mother would have had to have given the child her previous surname because the 2nd marraige had not taken place at the actual time of birth. I know this is confusing- but I am hoping someone may understand the point I'm trying to make. Helen

But one would have thought she would have put the dads name on altho if he wasnt present at the time and she wasnt representing herself as married to him, then his name couldnt go on the cert. One could come up with lots of presumtions but its probably a very simple explantion that only Mum could explain. Shirley

Hi Jim DOB is after the marriage (approx 3 weeks) and the 2nd husband is the father, the only thing i can think is when the birth took place mother 'forgot' who she was,but it seems a bit of a mystery.

Interestingly the fathers details are not entered, just an entry for mothers details and blank for father. Seems pretty strange but i guess it depends what details she told the registrar,as mother was the informant.

Really the birth registration is secondary to the actual date of birth. Is the dob before marriage? Is the first husband the natural father? Was an error made by the person registering the birth?

Unless for some reason Mum didnt want the children to have different surnames so they reg the youngest in her name so they could then re-register all three in her new married name. I take it the third kiddy has her dads name on her cert . Shirley

I have seen copies,it's actually my half sis. All three children are registered in the index under the name of mothers first marriage, but her 2nd marriage predates my sisters birth index,it in fact the previous quarter. All 3 were reregistered later in the name of the 2nd husband, but it's the dates for the 2nd marriage and half sisters birth that are realy being confusing. Iwas just curious as to how or why this would be,the only thing i can suggest is a late reg for the birth, but even then the names don't match thetimes. Glen

Have you got the certs for both events. they may give a clue as to why the child was reg in the mums previous name. Shirley

I know my mother married in 1946,and had two children to her first husband. She remarried in 1949,and a third child is registered in 1949,but i'm confused. The 2nd marriage is in the Jan/Mar qtr 1949,the 3rd child is in the Apr/June qtr 1949,but is in the surname of the first husband. So her birth is registered after the marriage but in different surname.I know from family history this child is the daughter of hubby number 2. But how could the later registration of the birth be in the surname her mother no longer used?(the name she took by the first marriage) Glen
