My Great Grandfather was Henry Robert Richard Marjoram. I found him on the ancestry site - born in Godstone in 1895. I'm confused because I can only find one 6 year old Henry in 1901 - in Leiston Suffolk - and I don't think that's him as he was born in Leiston. I've checked under Harry too. Any ideas - I'm a bit new to this so any help is greatly appreciated.

Do you know his parents names and those of any siblings?

If you've found the reference for his birth, then you will need to order the certificate, so you can see his parent's names. You will then know whether the one you found in the 1901 census is yours or not. Kath. x

50p says yours is the last child of this family (this is 1891 so before yours was born!!) Marjoram, Alice Jane abt 1885 Caterham, Surrey, England Daughter Croydon Surrey Marjoram, Ellen Mary abt 1889 Purley, Surrey, England Daughter Croydon Surrey Marjoram, John abt 1856 South Walsham, Norfolk, England Head Croydon Surrey Marjoram, John Luke abt 1879 Caterham, Surrey, England Son Croydon Surrey Marjoram, Sarah abt 1853 Coulsdon, Surrey, England Wife Croydon Surrey Marjoram, William George abt 1882 Caterham, Surrey, England Son Croydon Surrey Cateram is in Godstone district and they obviously like having more than one name each!! Have you not got your ancestor's marriage cert, which would have his father's name on it?? If not, then I would get the birth cert if I were you!! Merry

Godstone is in Surrey. People don't always give the correct birthplace on the census, so it could be your man. Kath. x

The one found on the 1901 census had parents called James and Eliza, so can't be the same family. Kath. x

Marjoram is a pecurliarly Suffolk/Norfolk name and I see on the first census results that Merry found, the father is from Norfolk. Is there any chance they were back in the area when the son was born? But that doesnt answer the question where is he in 1901? Or who the boy was you found on ancestry. I take it you have checked this Leiston boy for a death? If there is an early death record at least you could discount him as your ancestor. Do you know any of grandads siblings names? I see this birth in Gostone: William Henry Marjoram Vital: December 1908 - Godstone, Surrey

Thanks for your help everyone. I can see I'm going to have to take some of the census information as not being wholly accurate. I'll do a bit more research and I'll let you know how I get on.

Ooh, have I just lost 50p?? :o(( Merry

Stefan Report 6 Feb 2006 22:26

On the contrary! You're now 50p richer - where do I send the cheque? :) Grandad remembered some of the Aunts and Uncles names. He never knew his Grandparents though. He thought his Grandfather might have been a butcher and I think there's a workhouse somewhere in the story. I still don't seem to have any luck with the 1901 census though. I can't find the same information as you or Alice did. Am I doing something wrong? The 1891 census seems more accurate - it lists different places of birth - whereas the 1901 has Caterham for every member of the family.

I had a great session on ancestry.co.uk last night - i found all the marjorams back to 1819 - and have really found out a lot about how and where they lived. Thanks everyone for getting me past that tricky 1901 part.
