New to this board, but really impressed with how helpful you all are. I'd be really thrilled if someone can help me demolish my brick walls in Devon. SUSANNA(H) EARLE, b. abt. 1840 Totnes, Devon. First husband THOMAS KINSMAN, b.abt. 1838, thought to be Scotland, Occ. Baker. Married in Totnes Parish Church in 1858. On m.cert Susannah’s father is NICHOLAS EARLE, Mariner. I have all census details for the couple and their family from 1861 onwards and all show Susannah’s birthplace as Totnes. There are name variations for her – Susannah with and without an ‘h’ and even Susan. Thomas’ birthplace is Totnes on the 1861 but Scotland on the later ones. They moved to West Derby, Liverpool bet. 1871 & 81. However, I’ve drawn a blank on the 1851 for both Susannah and her father Nicholas. I cannot find a birth for Susanna(h)/Susan. Nicholas’ birthplace and date remain a mystery, and I can’t find a marriage for him. I haven’t found him on any census – perhaps he was at sea. Please can anyone advise where I can look next? They’re driving me mad. Many thanks, Pam

Suzanne Thanks for this - Nicholas could have been at sea. Will look further at the Watsons. Where did you find the 1841? Cheers, Pam

Merry, you're a star! Looks like I've got to invest in at least one cert in the near future. Thanks a lot. Pam

Hello again you lovely people - any idea where I might find Nicholas if he was at sea? And, does anyone know where East Stonehouse is? My road map only shows a Stonehouse near Devonport (Plymouth) - of course it figures if Nicholas was a Mariner. Pam

Hi Pam Stonehouse and East Stonehouse are one and the same. If you google East Stonehouse Devon you should get up the GENUK page about it. Jacqui.

Hello again everyone. I'm convinced you've found me the family and the marriage, and Nick's death. Thank you all so much. I did try to say thanks last night, but either GR or my ISP crashed just as I pressed 'send'. As it was already gone 1 am here in Cyprus, I didn't try again. I'm ordering the m/c for Nicholas and Jane. I wish I had a b/c to order for Susan/na(h) as confirmation of the right parents. I also wish they were well-heeled like my husband's ancestors so that I could get lots of PCC wills. Hey ho! Thanks again, Pam
