Can anyone help with a brick wall?

I've hit a brick wall on one side of my family and have been stuck ever since I started researching. I've had loads of help on here but still haven't managed to crack it. My g.grandfather, Albert Goodge died in 1952 from stomach cancer. His marriage certificate indicates his father as Alfred Goodge, tobacconist. Unfortunately though I can't find anything on him or his family. My grandfather said he knew nothing about his father as he never talked about his family. The only information the family have is his name and rumours that I haven't been able to prove. I know that he was in a mental asylum. He died in Coulsdon. Some truly wonderful people on GR have checked records of both asylums there for me but unfortunately there is no sign of him at either institution. I'm not sure what to do now. People on here have been really helpful in the past. Any ideas? :-s

You say he was a tobacconist, have you tried the directories?

If Alfred Goodge was a tobacconist, he should show up in a Trade Directory... http://www.historicaldirectories.org is worth a look - although I can't get it to load up properly at the moment. I was going ot look at ''Kelly's Directory of Surrey, 1913''. Christine

How old was he when he died? Any other dates/places/ages known? please take your duplicate request off the general board as it helps to have one thread so people on here can see what others are doing and not waste time looking up what someone else has done Peter

Here's all the details I have from marriage and death certificates: He married on 23rd December 1914 in Prittlewell, aged 34, waiter, son of Alfred Goodge, tobacconist, living at Bournemouth Park Road. He died June 1st 1952, at The Hospital Coulsdon, aged 69 years, of 33 Berwick Street, Victoria, Hotel Waiter. :-)

Looks like it's time to invest in a birth cert. The MOST LIKELY on free BMD is Albert Alfred b Sep Q 1879 Greenwich Vol 1d page 1019 Suggest that you order cert - that will give you both parents (if it's the right one .....- you get used to the odd miss!) Peter

Have you noticed that there's a three year discrepancy between the ages?

Luciacw

Luciacw Report 9 Feb 2006 20:34

Peter, looks like I'll have to do that, assuming the birth is registered. Andrew, yes I have noticed that discrepancy so very unsure about exactly when he was born. I should think the age on the marriage certificate is more likely though. Thanks :-)
