Hi Ann Thanks for looking for me, I know that they moved to Heywood sometime between 1881 and 1891, having two children, Ada and Harold then having a third child Frank who I believe died in 1896 age 8. How on earth do you know you have the right family if they have moved, the ages and place of birth tie in buts thats it?

The first thing you need to be aware of is that ages in the censuses are very flexible. People weren't particular about ages, and some people preferred to be a different age (my g-g-mother shed about eight years when she got married to a younger man, and kept up the fiction to the end!). Christine

I know James was 43 years and born in Ashton Under Lyne, working back through census info to 1861 have his dad as Hiram Shaw. Based on the 1861 census being taken 7/4/1861, low and behold I have googled the 1861 this morning and it says the census was taken 31/3/1861! This few days makes a huge difference to me as James was born 5/4/1857 meaning he could be 3 not 4 at the time, hence I have the wrong family!........ There is a 3 year old James too, born 20/12/1856 so this may be the correct relative, Is there a definite way of getting James in Heywood traced back to his younger days in Ashton U Lyne not having a clue who his parents were as a marriage cert is elusive as on one census Sarah was Elizabeth.... maiden name unknown but still born in Scotland and same year of birth.
