Myg.g.grandfather Jacob Paul was born in 1861 in Germany. I have him in 1901 living with my g.g.grandmother emma eliza paul. How do I find out when he came to the UK?

Actually they have passenger lists from Germany on the World de luxe ancestry package - I have seen my ancestors name and age on there, BUT I dont have access with the UK package. You could have a look on there and perhaps put a thread up asking if anyone has access?

Is 1901 the earliest census in which you can find him? Info about immigrants to the British isles here: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=243

I found them on the 1891. Eleanor E Paul abt 1886 Hackney, London, England Daughter Hackney London Emma E Paul abt 1860 Dagenham, Essex, England Wife Hackney London Henry E Paul abt 1890 Hackney, London, England Son Hackney London Jacob Paul abt 1861 Oberkern, Germany Head Hackney London Jacob Paul abt 1887 Hackney, London, England Son Hackney London Louisa M Paul abt 1889 Hackney, London, England Daughter Hackney London Maud E Paul abt 1890 Hackney, London, England Daughter Hackney London Jacob and Emma (nee Edwards) married Dec Qtr 1884. Don't see Jacob on the 1881 so that should help narrow down the search for his emigration. Rose

Ann. I have the same annotation for my German ancestors on the 1891 and the 1901. Went to Kew to find their naturalization or denization & it WASNT there. Asked about it and was told that was often the case.apparently the enumerator would say 'Germany!! do you have the right to be here?? & the answer would be 'YES' so he would write British Subject, Didn't mean that they had necessarily taken British citizenship Shirley

Have you got any idea where they came from in Germany? Or what religion they were? A few years ago I got in contact with a distant relative through GR (she is the granddaughter of my dad's first cousin). She had her great grandfather's (my great uncle) birth certificate, which gave the place he was born. So I knew which province the family might well have been from, Rheinland-Pfalz. It took forever, and I meant forever, but I heard back from a records office in Germany who i had contacted via email (Evangelische Arivstelle Boppard - part of the Evangelische Kirche In Rheinland) saying that they would have a look. That was in October. I heard back from them in Feb, and sent them 40 euros for the information that they had found.... They had managed to connect my great grandmother, Catharina Christina Hexamer born 1869 (dates and names I had from censuses and certs) to a Hexamer line that goes back to 1519!! I'd heard about this line before too. They gave me the marriage of my great grandparents in Burgsponheim in 1892. Basically, I started with nothing back in 1998, only what my nana who told me (and she still said she was born in Germany which she wasn't). It's taken 8 years but I've gotten there. 40 euros is a bargain for all the info I got!! I had tried naturalisation records, but my great grandfather never naturalised himself, and his I couldn't find a record of his sons' since they were after 1936 and I wasn't allowed to view them without proof of my connection, which I don't have. If they still exist that is (was before WW2). Keep on trying!
