I have trawled for a death in right time and area with no luck so far. But James has already shacked up with someone else?

A man left with young children when his wife died would often get hooked up with another woman pretty darned quickly.

Perhaps James' dad wasn't James senior and James senior chucked out mother and son saying 'never darken my door again' and then got Phoebe to be a mum to the older girls? Oops, no, he has younger son with him. nell

But he is shown as married, not widowed? Phoebe is shown as housekeeper. In 1881 she is elevated to post of wife.

This is what happened to me Heather. My 2xGGrandmother has one daughter, then gets married. She has 2 more children with him, then he disappears. She then 'shacks up' with another bloke and goes on to have another 6 children. He then disappears, leaving her alone in 1901 lol I hope that didn't happen to your lot :)

Of course Mary Ann could be shacked up with another chap, and pretending to be married to him. When and where was she born? do you have her dad's name and occupation from the marriage cert - she might have gone back home, maybe in 1861 to show off the new baby, and maybe in 1871 she was living there for good as husband had taken up with a 'floozy'! nell

Have James (my GGF) birth cert - gives Mary Ann as mum and James as dad. And this Phoebe is only a slip of a girl. Ive tracked her family down and she has a bro called Daniel - noticed she named youngest boy in the Hanson household Daniel.

Well, I have to discard that death as I have found a Mary Ann and her family living in the area who would have been same age.
