I have made a breakthrough but need someone to check the 1891 census please for a Henry J Alexander age 31 living at 18 Woodstock Road Hornsey RG12/1064 page 54 above his occupation does it say Mus inst , which I imagine means Musical Institution thanks a lot

It looks like journeyman, piano forte maker. Above is written Mus Inst which I am assuming is abbreviated for musical instrument. Maybe the enumerator made that extra notation in case someone didn't know what a piano forte was. Rose

Hi Valerie, Just had a look yes does look like Piono forto maker, and it looks like another persons writing has added musc inst, perhaps the person trying to put him in a catagory for the census, is deffinatley a different person writing it Sue

I've often seen category-type headings on occupation columns, added by a different hand, presumably for the purpose of classifying jobs to number-crunch. Quite often they write over and thus obliterate the original occupation. nell

Nope, not one, and then they tell me my Mary Ann Groves is the wrong one - but lovely Robin has worked out they changed their names from Graves to Groves and has given me a whole new lease of life, just about to order Mary Ann Graves. I ordered one earlier today - they are giving 8 March as despatch.
