I am trying to help a friend with her tree but have got stuck below are the facts as she and I know them ROBERT PERCIVAL MENZIES married SARAH ELIZABETH CROFTS (no cert sent for yet as no date known) ROBERT is attendant at Hants county lunatic asylum (from son’s marriage cert) PERCY (looks like DENE) ISHERWOOD married EMMIE ELIZA GREEN (no cert yet) PERCY is Officers’ chef HMS Edgar (from daughter’s marriage cert) WALTER JOHN MENZIES born to ROBERT & SARAH MENZIES 14.1.1911 Fontley Fareham AMY ELLEN ISHERWOOD born to PERCY 7 EMMIE ISHERWOOD 12.1.1908 at 8 Stamshaw Road, Stamshaw, Portsmouth hants. WALTER JOHN MENZIES married AMY ELLEN ISHERWOOD on 22 April 1933 at Christchurch Portsdown (Portsmouth) Witnesses to marriage were ALEXANDER GEORGE MENZIES & BESSIE EILEEN ? (just cannot read the surname) WALTER AND AMY had a daughter living and subsequently adopted in March 1938 my friend is her daughter. AMY ELLEN MENZIES died 11.6.1935 at Swanwick (death cert) I am trying to a).Find the death of WALTER JOHN MENZIES. And b). find birth/marriage details of ROBERT AND SARAH MENZIES (nee CROFTS) and PERCY & EMMIE ISHERWOOD (nee GREEN). I have tried the 1901 without success and also for WALTER’S death Free BMD, also without success. Any tips/advice/help appreciated thanks. Ann Glos

Have you looked at the ancestry bmd index beta - its free at the moment (not the freebmd section which isnt complete)

I would try searching on ancestry, for the birth/marriage

Heather, thanks, no I haven't, I shy away from Ancestry a bit as I don't want to get sucked in, I do intend to join in April when I come back from 3 weeks holiday. But OK if you don't think they will try and get me to join i will have a look on there. Thanks for your interest. Ann Glos

Im confused so i'll ask. its the Amy Ellen Isherwood the girl that married Walter Menzies? who dies in 1935? who gives birth in 1938? or is that when she was adopted?...and is it her name that we are trying to find , pre adoption?

sorry, hubby came home and I went to 'do' lunch!! Tracy, so many thanks for that. I couldn't find them on the 1901, how strange. Jess Amy Isherwood maried Walter Menzies in 1933 and gave birth to my friend's mother in 1934, Amy died in 1935 friend's mother was then adopted age 3 and a half in 1938. We were trying to find the death of Walter john Menzies as he seems to have disappeared. of course at a push he could still be alive. I think I have put it clearly now. sorry, woolly headed, got a stinking cold. Ann Glos

A young man unable to cope with a baby daughter could have travelled, changed occupation. remarried, emigrated. Portsmouth has some good street directories. You could look to see if he is listed during the period of his marriage, and if he subsequently disappers. Is he on the electoral rolls for the address, even if not on street directories? What happens to Alexander, his brother? Are there any siblings born post 1911?
