Im trying to determine the maiden name of my gt gt Grandmother. The known facts are that she married John NOTTINGHAM b 1821 Cheltenham wife Lucy UNKNOWN b 1938 Cheltenham Children William NOTTINGHAM b c1850 Cheltenham Walter NOTTINGHAM 1858 Cheltenham John NOTTINGHAM 1860 Cheltenham Mary NOTTINGHAM 1863 Cheltenham Ellen NOTTINGHAM 1870 Cheltenham Albert NOTTINGHAM 1874 Cheltenham Nelly NOTTINGHAM 1888 Cheltenham I checked the BMD database and the only marriages for a John Nottingham in Cheltenham was in Dec 1856 where one of the potential partners was a Lucy BOWERS The only problem with this would be that William was born in 1850 which would seem unusual in those days. Would it be possible for someone to take a look at the 1851/61/71 censuses to see if they throw any light on the matter. eg in 1851 Is John unmarried with a son William? what is Lucy BOWERS doing at this time? What is Lucy BOWERS age on the 51 census ? If we can find Lucy Bowers family and establish ishe married John obviously it would be great to find what info is available on her family. Hi Wade, The problem is that GR scrunchs the whole message together like that. What you have to do with long messages is put a simple query in the title box and add it then go into the thread again and add the rest of it as a answer by clicking the add reply. many thanks FC I'm starting to wonder whether William c 1850 is really part of the family. He shows up in the 18881 census and as most of the Nottinghams's in Cheltenhma at this time were from this family I find of assumed that he was from this family. Is there any record of a William NOTTINGHAM c 1850 in the 51, 61 or 71 censuses? Wade

Excellent Well done Suzane So William is the son of Wiliam who is 'my' John's brother In that case Lucy Bowers does look a fit for my Gt Grandmother Too bad there does nt seem to be any trace of her on the censuses. Quite a bit of rejogging of my tree me thinks.

Wade - I would draw your attention to John's [approximate] date of birth in I believe 1821, Lucy's [approximate] date of birth in 1838 - and William's [approximate] date of birth in 1850 - and wonder if John wasn't married before his marriage to Lucy. Even though dates of birth are approximate, Lucy would have only been 12 when he was born!! Just a thought - and hope I HAVE got this right!!! Want tol save you re-jigging your re-jigging!! Victoria
