OK I have now got Walter Roberts in 1861 Jane Roberts abt 1791 Puncknowle, Dorset, England Wife Bridport Dorset William Roberts abt 1793 Whitechurch, Dorset, England Head Bridport Dorset His wife's death Deaths Mar 1862 ROBERTS Jane Bridport 5a 294 And then William Walter Roberts Furzman, who we know was the son of Elizabeth Furzman, who in 1871 was listed as niece at William Roberts address, as niece. I have just read the will and it doesn't make anything clearer, I guess if it was his sone he would not really be forthcoming in admitting having a child with his niece. I guess Willaim WR is a birth certificate job after all. :-(

Thanks Sue... I will come back to Walter shortly, but William is looking very interesting at the moment.... Georgina (or anyone)! So I have Elizabeth Furzman(William's mother) living with Walter Roberts listed as niece and then we have her son William Walter Roberts Furzman listed as boarder. I have just spoke to a family member who says that Walter Roberts will left all his estate to William via his mother Elizabeth. Possible that uncle/niece had child?

It is difficult to be certain of the parents' names, especially the mother's name, without buying the certificates. You could try to find their baptisms, but by those dates many children were not baptised, or if they were it was sometimes years after their birth. And you would most likely have to go to the record office to look for the baptism entries, anyway. You can try to find them on the census and if you can find them with their fathers, that will tell you the father's name, or at least the name he was known by! (Which might not be the same as his 'official' name on certificates.) But of course if you find them with father and father's wife, you can't be sure that the father's wife is the child's mother, as she could be a second wife if the child's mother had died. If you can also find the father on the census before the child was born and he definitely has the same wife, then she must be the child's mother, but again, her name on the census might only be a middle name or nickname. And certainly the best way to find out her maiden name is from a birth certificate. If you aren't sure which of the two certificates is the right one, then you can specify 'checking references' when you order one of them from the GRO, for example, the father's name, and if it doesn't match they will refund part of your money and not send the certificate. Sometimes if you order the certificate from the local register office they will do such a check for you and not charge you if it isn't the one you want, but not all register offices will do this. Have you found them on the census?

I am trying to confirm the parents of Walter Fursman b1882 in Whitchurch Canonicorum, Dorset. (Not the Walter born in same location 1892)..... Also I am trying to confirm the parents of Willam WR Fursman b1864 in Whitchurch Canonicorum. Can anyone dig out anything to maybe save a poor researcher having to purchase certificates.
