In next census he is a copper man , but the other 1891 Occupations look like shopwork in the street... Thanks for your input will get a magnifying glass or new brain. Kim

Heather

Heather Report 11 Mar 2006 23:30

In 1881 he is a labourer. In 1891 - it has been classified with a MC after the job, I think its something to do with copper mining? If you look at the neighbours all the English ones seem to be involved in copper working of some sort. There is a smelterman on the previous page - thought his doesnt look like smelter does it.

I think that it's probably meant to be ''Calcinerman'': To calcine is to heat a substance so that it oxidizes or reduces (from Latin Calcina - quicklime, which is used in the process). A calciner is an old word for a metal smelting kiln. Therefore, Heather is right - he was probably working in the copper smelting industry. Found one Calcinerman on Google, on a voters list of Swansea, 1869-70: http://www.page-net*com/swansea.localhistory/gorseinon/pages/loughor.htm River Lane: Calcinerman in Copperworks Richard
