OK, both sides of my mothers family are a total nightmare - I can't get anywhere! On her mother's side:- Frederick Ward born c1852 in Sheffield (possibly Grenoside or Ecclesfield) He married Matilda Naylor born c1851 in Ecclesfield Had lots of children between 1871 and 1896 all born in Ecclesfield. I have them on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census but can't find them on 1871 - could be because they got married after census was taken. Any ideas where I can go from here? Jayne x

Hi Yvonne, That's brilliant - I can get their marriage certificate now and at least know his father's name and have a starting point (can you call it a starting point when you're going backwards????). Thanks again Jayne x

Jayne, you should be able to find them on the 1861 census, which will give you their parents and siblings (try 1837online).

Hi Mary, I've had a look on Ancestry and there is more than 1 Frederick Ward born around the same time in Sheffield so without knowing the father's name I don't know which one he is! Jayne x

Gawd, I wouldnt want to live in Lump! Well while you are waiting for the certificate Id have a look anywhere at those two possibles. See if any of the kids names - Ambrose is an unusual one - appears for either of the possible families. And see if theres a job match for Fred? This looks a good bet - Fred is down as 'daughter'! and a file cutter: Perhaps we should lay bets on which of about 5 Freds is right! There's only one Matilda Naylor on 1837online - age 10, living in Wortley. Sounds like the right one.

Hi Heather, The first one looks quite promising, Frederick and Matilda's kids are:- George Charles Ambrose Thomas Harry Fred Harriett James Elizabeth Arthur So quite a few of their kids names appear in that first entry, although they are quite common names aren't they, except Kezia and Ambrose!
