I have a JOHN WILLIAM (at birth registered WILLIAM) but my promlem is a JOSEPH W. The family name is unusual enough for me to be sure that births from 1837 to 1960 ish are likely to be my extended family if not my direct line, so how come i have an name (from the absent voters register 1918 living close to my family) and medal record for the same but can find no birth or even close match, To vote he must have been over 21 and to fight say up to 60 giving a birth range of roughly 1860-1897 yet i can find no birth record for him. pondering yet another mystery. Richard, I've looked on family relatives and printed off births from 1866 - 1920 and no sign of this one, have also checked upto dec1865 on 1837 so spent a fortune and still missed out. Does this mean that Family relatives is not complete? Thanks so much any way Joan. |

Many thanks to all. I had most of the details apart from the birth of Joseph, and the where abouts of Ernest. Certificates are ordered in priority ie need to confirm or eliminate the relation ship,I did feel that Ernest was the child of George Ozyer so he was a cousin on my direct line, and as such on the to get list, this now seems to be wrong parent and it explains why i couldn't find him with the known family. So OrangeBlossom--- please tell me how did you manage to identify them. I knew of the Ozyer/Chadwick marriage but as not direct line never searched the census under that name but the children never came up on any search i've done. Zoe , thanks yes that is my John william with his mum and new husband and her mum mary ozyer. Again thanks to all for above and beyond tha call . One last request anyone got the winning lottery numbers for Wednesday as i think i'll need it to pay for the certs i want!! |

Joan, it was mainly pot luck. When I couldn't find him under the correct spelling, I looked for anything ending in 'er' that could look like 'Ozy' in the wrong handwriting lol |

Thats also how I found Joseph's birth - I tried different possibilities of how the name could have been mis-spelt. Oyzer seemed like a good one to try for Ozyer, and bingo! Uncommon names are a double-edged sword - they are easier to determine the family connections as there are less of them around, but they are more often mis-transcribed as the transcribers aren't familiar with the name. You can't use wildcards at the beginning of words on Ancestry by the way - you must have at least 3 characters before the * . Therefore, it's a case of trial and error, and trying likely combinations. Richard |
