Mel Yes that's the right family, I think 'Johnny' was born in 1890's. The death for Mary Whittam is correct September 1901 was when it was registered but I can't find reference to her on the census only William and Maggie living as servant and boarder with a Dickinson family. How else could I find her on the census - I was wondering whether I couldn't find her because she may have been hospitalised? but surely she should have been registered somewhere? It's all a mystery! Georgina My Great grandfather William was born in 1882 and sister Margaret was born 1887. Their parents were James born in 1859 and Mary born in 1861 all were born in Barrow. Helen

There is a death listed for Mary Whittam in qtr 3 1901 Barrow in Furness which gives dob of 1861 - is that the right one? If it is she would be on the 1901 census. Mel

I think you might be right about the name, I've been looking for a variations on the name Johnny but with no success I will probably find that he's called something completely different - very frustrating. Thanks for your help. Helen

Oh, and another thing, my mother has various 'uncles' and 'aunts' who turn out to be her mother's second cousins or something like that! Kate.

Kate Report 14 Mar 2006 16:36

I am willing to bet that Johnny wasn't his 'official' name. If you're lucky he will have been a John, but if you are unlucky then either John was his middle name or just a nickname. For instance, I have just been looking for my great-aunt's husband Stephen in the records and he turned out to be Reginald Stanley N.! Make of that what you will! Kate.

I'm going mad - my grandma tells me that she had an uncle Johnny Whittam born in Barrow in Furness late 1890's and I can't find any trace of him either by birth, death or census! Both his parents James and Mary Whittam died before the census in 1901 which has made it really difficult. I found his brother (my grandad William) and sister Margaret living together but no trace of Johnny. My Grandma believes he ended up going into the army but don't really know where to start with that - can anybody help???? Helen Yes I have all the details of their deaths and marriage, how can I use this?
