No, no, you're alright, just making sure!! I only noticed afterwards you had posted the cert details earlier. It might be that fred's birth reg didn't make it to the GRO indexes....... You could try contacting the local registrars or you could get a cert for one of the siblings: Name: Robert Barnes Year of Registration: 1886 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: West Derby County: Lancashire Volume: 8b Page: 408 or Name: Martha Jane Barnes Year of Registration: 1884 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: West Derby County: Lancashire Volume: 8b Page: 666 Merry

Ok, great g'dad fred's occupation on the cert is listed as labourer, his fatehr frederick barnes is railway porter as listed on the census, part of the marriage cert is ripper off where I presume the occupation of the groom's dad may have been (its the original) Witnesses were Martha Johnson (perhaps fred's sister married) and Thomas Reynolds

Merry

Merry Report 14 Mar 2006 21:10

Crikey! Fab, speedy replies everyone! So impressed... Ok. The birth cert. I ordered which I don't think is my freddy is Frederick Stanley Barnes (May 1889), parents Henry and Sarah (gro ref is 8b 335 if that helps) My great aunt gives her dad Fred's birthday as 7th April or May - she could be wrong, but I'm inclined to trust her as she has been correct on everything I've looked into so far - could be wrong of course. Fairly sure thsi is wrong, as the cenus returns for 1901 and 1891 I found list brothers and sisters, which were confirmed by my great aunt as correct. His parents names on the census are Elizabeth and Frederick Barnes (i'm surrounded by Freds!). Fred died 1964. Brothers and sisters are Mary, Martha, Robert, John. Dad is a railway porter in 1901 and 1891. Thought I would add these details now and go back through everyone's replies in detail. Census ref for 1891 is RG12/2999, FOLIO 111, page 43. Many thanks for the suggestions!

His death cert will only give his date of birth if he lived until 1969. Even then, it's only the dob as suggested by the informant, which might be right, but might not! Merry

Sarah Sorry to be thick, but how do you know the cert you got was the wrong one, if you don't know who his parents were? Olde Crone

Hmmm, this is driving me banana's. Been wanting to get my great-g'father's birth cert to see his parents and such, but I can't seem to find him in the registers. According to his marriage cert: age 24 in 1913, so born 1888/9, his daughter seems pretty certain of his birth date as april/may 1888 in west derby, lancs (liverpool). The census returns seem to back both the location and his birth year up too. I ordered what i thought was the right cert but unfortunately wasn't. :( If i order his death cert. will that give his birth date? as i'm 99% certain about the ref I have found for this. His name is frederick barnes in case anyone has a magic wand to wave!
