I'd ring the GRO and ask them to have a look at their copy for you. I've found them very helpful if I can't read anything on a certificate. They are much more used to reading old handwriting. Kath. x

Roger in Sussex

Helen, I think it says that Lipman Cohen born 1821 Aldgate was a cap maker employing 29 men. Seems a large scale business to make caps, but perhaps they were the sort of caps which Jewish men wear for religious reasons, as you say that it was a Jewish area ? Roger Update: looking at other entries, the enumerator put a flourish on the beginning of his letters M , so perhaps it was only two men after all. Seems a more reasonable size of business ! lol

Is this the happy couple in 1881? 22 W.C Rd, Whitechapel, London, Samuel Cohen abt 1852 London, Middlesex, Head Frances Cohen abt 1858 London, Middlesex,Wife Julia Cohen abt 1875 London, Middlesex,Daughter Laura Cohen abt 1877 Murry St Hopton Daughter Olive Cohen abt 1879 London, Middlesex, Daughter I'm having trouble finding a Samuel Cohen born the right era with a father called Lip_ something. I am just wondering, if they ARE Jewish, I know husband's lot had two names - I think they had a special synagogue name. So for example, on his gt grandpa's birth cert, the father is given as Solomon Hart. On gt grandpa's marriage cert father is Zalig Hart. This is where I began to think I'd gone horribly wrong, but then I found the death cert for Solomon Zalig Hart and all became clearer! nell

The fact that the family had a Jewish name didn't mean they were practising Jews.

Guys and gals first thanks for all your help!! Thats an ideal!! If Could somebody be so kind to look up on the 1871 census in the Bethnal green area of London. The info I have is off their 1874 Marriage Cert. Samuel Cohen born c.1853 so he would have been 18 in 1871 Shown on M. Cert as living at 26 Canrobert Street, prof. Cigar Maker Father shown as Liper Cohen (deceased) Cigar Maker Frances Elizabeth Baldwin born c1857 so she would have been about 14 in 1871. Shown on M. Cert as living at 35 Canrobert Street. Father shown as John Baldwin (deceased) Blacksmith. . Thanks everyone As a matter of interest Canrobert St. still exists. for some reason they got married in a Christian Church despite the Jewish name.

This is the nearest I could find on FreeBMD deaths: Deaths Jun 1898 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COHEN Leibe 64 Islington 1b 241 Unless it was Lionel or Lipman? Of course, I don't know whether that Leibe was male or female... Kate.

You could try looking on the 1871 census for him. If he was alive in 1874 then he should be on the census. Look up the son's name and he might still have been living at home. If not, you have the father's occupation, so you could do a search on all Cohen's with that occupation living in whatever area they were in at the time.

Cohen is a Jewish surname, so chances are first name is Jewish too. My husband has Jewish ancestry and a family name which occurs is Lipman. But I suggest you compare the handwriting in the name you can't read with other letters on the cert - or try finding this person in a census or other cert index. nell

Just got a Marriage cert. today of an ancestor from 1874 the fathers first name.. looks like LIPER second name Cohen. Has anybody come across the first name Liper before? The 'p' in Liper could be another letter. Its a funny looking 'p'
