I have just received my husbands' Grandmothers birth certificate from 1922 and in the last box (box number 10) where is says Name entered after registration there is a slash across it and the word Three and the initials of the registrar. The only other time I have seen that box used was for my cousin where it said adopted. The birth was registered 9th January 1922 and she was born 25th November 1921. Did they register the birth then add the name later? All help much appreciated.

Was there a name in the last column that was crossed out or just a slash through the column? The number and registrar's initials usually means that he has made a mistake and the number three would mean that that was the third mistake in the list of mistakes he has to record. Kath. x

Are you sure it says Three? What was the lady's name?

Are there any alterations elsewhere on the certificate.? Have they just used the space perhaps to clarify what should have been written in another column?

Angela Positive it;s a three. and hubbies grandmother was called just 'Elsie' no middle names or anything Kathleen there is no name just a line across it. Could he have just been having a really bad day then?

Hi Gwyneth There doesn't appear to be any other alterations in the certificate that I can see.

If there is no other mistake on the certificate, I think he was just having a bad day. You could probably phone the appropriate register office and see if they can come up with a better explanation. I wouldn't have thought that putting a line through the column would constitute a mistake that needed initialing though. Kath. x

Yes, the only time Ive seen this was on a death cert where corrections had been made - even a spelling one had a number and the registrars intials in the end column.

My paternal grandfather's birth certificate has the same thing (number and registrar's initials) in the margin, but in this case the number was 'nine' - definitely not a good day (He had written 'July' instead of 'December' in the birthdate column, and crossed it out).

No Margaret. Most of my certs. are like that. If the child was adopted mine say so in the space to the right of that column.

Don't forget though pre 1927 there was no formal adoption procedure,at least not as we know it today. The Adoption Act was not enacted until 1927. Glen
