I have two sons called Joseph in one family. Both survived. Joseph Matthew was later known sometimes as Matthew and sometimes as Joseph. His brother was plain Joseph who later called himself Joseph Hetherington [sometimes!] And yes---their father was Joseph and they were all painters and decorators at the same time!!!!!! wendy |

Great granny was Eliza Elizabeth. On birth certificate and at christening, so even the vicar accepted them as two separate names. |

Thanks everyone. Now I am wondering why one was lodging in a pub with her father and the other two were living with their mother and her new husband. Oh I love a good mystery! Julia |

I have Eliza, Lizzie and Elizabeth in my tree, poor mites must have gotten confused! My dad said it was probally to stop arguments but none of the family before that I know of were Elizabeth or any varient of and other children were not named after anyone. Since 2 of the girls were born after 1901 I'm haveing to wait to see who shows up in 1911 otherwise it's trawling through the death entries just incase. |

Julia, I also have siblings Eliza, Elizabeth AND a Bessie in my tree born within ten years of each other. It caused me some problems when they got older and decided to alter their names slightly on each census! Elaine. |

Thanks Jools for replying, my husband thinks that I have researched incorrectly, but I am 99% sure that I have got it right. I suppose that the only thing I can do is buy the certificates. This family is causing no end of problems! Julia |

Unfortunately parents do exactly what you have described (and more). They also had a happy knack of using the same name twice. For example, Harry born in 1870 dies in 1871, so the next male child born in 1872 is called - HARRY !!!! There's nowt so strange as folk. :)) |

I am now researching another branch of my family and according to the 1851 census (father living at one address and mother at another married to another man!) there are two sisters called Eliza and Elizabeth, would the parents normally do that? Both were born within a couple of years of each other. Why is this family giving me so many problems?! Julia |
